The Magnetron is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool microwaves. It is the main electronic component responsible for generating microwave energy for cooking and heating foods.

Causes of a bad magnetron can include electrical issues such as power surges, overheating due to blocked ventilation, or internal component wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a bad magnetron include:

  • The microwave not heating food
  • Unusual buzzing or humming noises during operation
  • A burning smell coming from the microwave
  • The microwave shutting down or failing to start

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore microwave models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Magnetron (Part Number: OEM20661468)

Hello David, thank you for contacting AppliancePartsPros.com This being an inverter model microwave, there is no individually serviceable diode. All of the high voltage components are part of either the Magnetron W11346197 or the Inverter W11325604. It is recommended by the manufacturer to replace both of these components together if either has gone bad because one of them failing generally damages the other.

Hello Kay, thank you for contacting Appliance Parts Pros. The first thing I would try is to turn off the unit at the breaker for about 5 minutes and see if that resolves the issue. If that does not resolve the issue you may have a loose wire to the microwave filter board or fuse block, an open fuse, a bad door switch, or a failed control board. To further diagnose the issue the unit will need to be pulled out of its installation opening for access to components.

Larry, with the power supply turned off, the magnetron W11346197 would need to be inspected for a damaged antenna and the terminals tested for resistance. The magnetron should measure less than 1 Ohm of resistance. If the magnetron tests good, the most likely failure would be the inverter W10217711.

Mark, It would be suggested to check the door switches first to make sure that they are good. Then you can test the magnetron for less than one ohm of resistance. If the door switches and the magnetron are good then the issue would be with the inverter board if it is receiving 120 vac to it.

MICROWAVE ACTS LIKE IT'S RUNNING, BUT NO HEAT UP 1. I had a pro come out. He replaced the door switches, Still no heat, but after 22 seconds F1E5 error comes up. One of the switches did show poor function in the machine, but worked on the bench. 2. He said it was the inverter. Brought a new one, still same error code; cleared error code and repeated a couple of time. He called Kitchenaid. First level tech no help, second level said replace the inverter again, then the magnetron, and if still no good replace the appliance manager. I decided I could guess as well as them. 3. I ordered all three parts from you. Came quickly, good price. Put in the inverter in. Started to replace the magnetron, but when taking the thermistor (diagram part 21) out, it cracked and fell apart. AHA. I have that part on backorder someplace - nobody has it back to Whirlpool. Maybe never will come. OK, I decided the thermistor was safety device and shorted around it to test with the old magnetron. NO MORE ERROR CODE, BUT NO HEAT EITHER. I figure I don't actually USE the microwave this way, but I put the sides back on for testing purposes. 4. I read some of the other questions, looked at the circuit diagram, and checked my resistance through the magnetron terminals at < 1 ohm (across terminals), open either terminal to ground. This sounds like my existing magnetron is OK. 5. I'm assuming magnetron OK for now. I saw in another question you said diode of transform, but there is no diode on the online parts diagram nor the tech diagram that came attached in the microwave, and the only transformer isn't even on the same part of the parts diagram. Suggestions appreciated. Should I put in the appliance manager board? Thanks.

Paul, This unit will not have a diode or transformer as it uses an inverter board in place of it. With the magnetron testing ok and the switches having been replaced then this will most likely be the appliance manager causing this issue but will want to replace that thermistor as well.

Hello Paul, I would replace the inverter board W10217711 and the appliance manager WPW10350780 at the same time since the inverter board caused the fault code and it could be damaging the appliance manager board. The magnetron thermistor is W10852735.

Hello Willy. Replace the diode with the magnetron in the unit. Also, make sure no one is using the microwave with metal inside it. This will damage the magnetron as well.

Hello Mark. If the magnetron reads 0.00, It is bad. You should get a reading from it.
