This 3-speed drive motor powers the washer's agitation and spin cycles. Replacing a weak or failed motor restores proper wash action and spin performance so loads complete reliably.

  • Provides three motor speeds as commanded by the timer/control for wash and spin
  • Converts electrical power into rotation to drive the transmission and basket
  • Common failure symptoms: no agitation or spin, loud humming then shut-off, overheating/thermal trips, burning odor from the motor area, or intermittent stopping mid-cycle
  • Can also prevent the washer from starting the cycle when the motor is shorted or seized
What's included: 1 drive motor assembly Install notes:
  • Unplug the appliance before servicing; allow the old motor to cool before handling
  • Access the motor per your model's service procedure; disconnect wiring and any attached pump/drive components as required
  • Transfer any model-specific brackets or shields from the old motor if needed; ensure connectors are fully seated
  • Secure all retaining clips/fasteners and run an empty test cycle to confirm agitation and spin at all speeds
Speed variant note: Replace like-for-like. This part is a 3-speed motor; using a different speed variant may cause improper operation.

For Whirlpool Drive Motor (3-Speed) (Part Number: OEM18038670)

Eddie for Model Number 110.28722700

My Kenmore 700 washer, which is about 5 years old, will not spin on every cycle. I checked the pump, clutch & motor coupling and they were fine. I changed the lid switch because it was bad. It still did the same thing. I changed the timer.because it sounded like it was not moving through all the cycles; but that was not the problem either. I can hear the motor humming like it is trying to go into the spin cycle but then it stops, almost like it's overheating. It does the same thing when there are no clothes in the machine. All I have left are the transmission and motor. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Eddie. Turn the motor by hand and make sure nothing is binding. If not, you will need to order and replace the motor in the unit.

My Motor started to smoke & stopped. I took apart the washer. Took off the pump. It turned with a little resistance but seemed okay. I turned shaft on motor it turn free in both directions. The tub spun one way & the shaft in tub went back & forth the other. I put the washer back together. It ran with out any clothes for a full cycle. The water both in & out was fine. I ran another cycle with some clothes. It Stopped in the last spin. After about 10 minutes it started up spun out the water. I believe it was off on motor overload. This unit is 8 years old. When it was uder warranty we have a technition over because the was a squeek a the end of some spin cycles. Is there anything else that could cause the motor to do this. Could the squeek cause anything. I would want to order the motor if it is only this. I think the # is 8529935. Thank you for your help; Mike

Hello Mike. No, if the bearings are good, and if the motor does this again, you will need to order and replace the motor in the unit.

my model number is for the washer ,kenmore. my problem is,i belive the motor. washer fills but no drain ,no agatate,no wash. motor hums like its trying. i remove the water pump from one side of motor, then i jumpered the lid switch and pluged the machine in,then set to spin cycle, motor again hums,i reach down and helped the shaft to spin on motor. it takes off like normal. motor seems good.just needs a boost to start? why is this. motor seems good.

Jim, Check for 120 VAC across the yellow and black wire on the motor, while it's humming. at the yellow Improper volyage would indicate a faulty timer WP8539991 or low voltage at the outlet. If the voltage is correct, then you'd have a bad motor winding WP8529935. Thanks

Hello Mark. If the clutch is bad on the unit and is not getting to a full spin, it will cause the issue you are having. Also, a bad motor coupling or pump can be the issue.

Anthony for Model Number whool pool washer

Hi. I have a whirlpool washer and last night my wife turned it on and it went to fill and when it was supposed to go to the next step to wash, it blew a fuse but only in agatate. The spin works but not wash. Is it the motor or the capacitor burned out to make it just blow a fuse? How can I test this motor with my meter for forward and reverse. Is it a switch in the motor? my motor is a Number 8529935 washer motor thaks anthony muro cedargrove NJ

1 Answer

Hello Anthony. Sounds like the motor or the harness has shorted. It could also be a set of points in the timer that has stuck. We can look up more specific information for you with a model number. Have a great day!
