Part Number: OEM18038670
Manufacturer Part Number: WP8529935

This 3-speed drive motor powers the washer's agitation and spin cycles. Replacing a weak or failed motor restores proper wash action and spin performance so loads complete reliably.

  • Provides three motor speeds as commanded by the timer/control for wash and spin
  • Converts electrical power into rotation to drive the transmission and basket
  • Common failure symptoms: no agitation or spin, loud humming then shut-off, overheating/thermal trips, burning odor from the motor area, or intermittent stopping mid-cycle
  • Can also prevent the washer from starting the cycle when the motor is shorted or seized
What's included: 1 drive motor assembly Install notes:
  • Unplug the appliance before servicing; allow the old motor to cool before handling
  • Access the motor per your model's service procedure; disconnect wiring and any attached pump/drive components as required
  • Transfer any model-specific brackets or shields from the old motor if needed; ensure connectors are fully seated
  • Secure all retaining clips/fasteners and run an empty test cycle to confirm agitation and spin at all speeds
Speed variant note: Replace like-for-like. This part is a 3-speed motor; using a different speed variant may cause improper operation.

Jimmy, unfortunately the manufacturer does not make that part available separate. If you need a new shaft, you'll have to purchase the complete motor assembly, sorry!

Chris, It is possible that the drive motor has failed. You will want to test to see if the motor is getting 120 vac to it. If it is then yes the motor would need replaced. If there is not then there would be an issue with the wiring or the timer.

Hello Carl. Try turning the coupling by hand and see if the transmission is locked up in agitate. If so, you will need to replace the transmission.

Sammy for Model Number gsw9800pw2 whirpool washer

Hi...I just purchased, from appliancepartspros.com, a new clutch and motor coupling. I replaced them both and the washer is working fine but when I was replacing them, I saw that the heart of the problem appears to be a worn motor shaft that is loosing its shape and not holding on to the coupling that well (leave a little wiggle room)...instead of replacing the entire motor, anyway to replace just the shaft or any other ideas short of an entire motor replacement?...thanks for your help!

Sammy, Unfortunately the motor shaft cannot be replaced separately and the motor would need to be replaced.

Paul, Based on this information you will want to check the agitator dogs to make sure that they are not damaged but with the grinding noise it sounds more like an issue of a bad gearcase.

Sam for Model Number WTW5830SW0

Initial issue was loud banging at end of spin cycle. I replaced basket drive/drive block because they were bad. After reassembling, the washer now fills fine but trips the breaker as soon as it gets to the agitate cycle or if I set it to any cycle that uses the motor. The motor never starts up, it trips immediately. I took motor/transmission off and connected everything to see if it would try to run and it trips breaker immediately. Had no other known issues with motor/tripping breaker in the past. I think it's the motor, but I don't want to replace the motor if it's an electrical/wire issue. May have gotten a little water from the hose on some components. I have a multimeter. How do I determine if the issue is a bad motor or something else? Could the motor have been damaged from water? Thank you.

Hello Sam. Unplug the motor and see if it trips the breaker. If not, the motor needs to be replaced. If it does, you have a direct shorted wire on the unit and will need to locate it.

Hello Tom. If the lid switch is good, then you need to check and see if the motor is bad or the timer. The motor is a 2 direction motor. If the timer is powering both legs, then you need to replace the timer. If just one leg is powered, but the motor hums, you will need to replace the motor. Use the wiring diagram in the control panel to test this. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Scott. It could be the motor bad or the bearings are bad and causing friction in the unit.

Hello Rick. If the motor is tight and dragging, you will need to replace the motor. If it turns good, and the unit hums, you may need to order and replace the timer in the unit.
