Usually on only 1 & sometimes 2 pieces of clothing. Generally in a small area 6-12 " square. What is that a symtom of? Bought in 1979 & quality too good to replace w/ new unit!
Jim October 03, 2013 for Model Number Maytag A612 What is required to install the mounting stem repair kit? Should the bearing also be replaced? How is this done?
1 Answer Hello Jim. You will need to replace both the bearing and stem kit. Here are most of the basics. Once you have the front panel removed and the top raised up and agaist the wall(of course you've already unplugged the power cord and turned the water faucets off). Remove the tub cover There are 8 tabs along the outer paotion of the outer tub, prees down on the tub cover and "unsnap" the retainer tabs, and remove the cover. remove the agitator. loosen, but don't remove the 1/4 in. haex head screw in the lower portion of the agitator barrel, and lift the agitator out. Using the spanner wrench and hammer loosen and remove the clamping nut( this is a left handed thread, so it must be turned clockwise, be careful with the hammer, don't chip the porcelain spin tub, then lift the spin tub out of the outer tub. Using an allen wrench or #25 "torx" remove the set screw from the mounting stem assembly(the set screw is located in the indentations for the spanner wrench). This is also a left handed thread and will unscrew in a clockwise direction. Once the stem is removedremove any remaining seal, clips and washer from the area. Disconnect the tub to pump hose from the bottom tub outlet. Using a 1/2 in socket and a boxxed end 1/2 in. wrenck loosen and remove the three tub mounting bolts which hold the outer tub to the support legs. Grasp the tub and lift it up and rest it on the transmission shaft and disconnect the air dome hose from the tub right rear corner area and set the tub on the floor. step on and push the bearing assembly out the bottom of the tub, flip the tub over and insert the new bearing assembly into the bottom of the tub, use slight pressure ans seat the bearing in the tub opening. Check and remove the sinterred bearing race( if it remained stuuck on the transmission housing) clean the area with sandpaper and lubricate with high speed oil(turbine oil 55977) or an equivalent. and reverse the procedure, Before you install the mounting stem, put a few(3 or 4) drops of oil inside the bearing assembly, then complete the install of the stem and tubs. Before you complete the repair. start the washer and run it in the final spin cycle for at least 5 minutes to seat the bearing and the seal, then start the washer and check for leaks( you may also want to add detergent to the water to help wash out the tub and interior of any grease, oil, etc. If all goes well it should take somewhere around one hour to repair and test the washer. Kw L. September 30, 2013 for Model Number lat9356aae is the mounting stem, the part with the torx set screw (ap4390013), need to be removed from the inner tub with a gear puller, or should to inner tube pull right off with the tub?
1 Answer KW, Yes the mounting stem is the "the part with the torx set screw" and the cork surface. You will need a special "spanner wrench" TB123B to remove the clamping nut WP6-2110472, then remove the basket, remove the torx set screw, then use the spanner wrench to remove the mounting stem assembly. Presumably you have a leak from the center of the tub, or the washer doesn't spin, due to a seized tub bearing. You'll find it best to replace both parts 6-2095720 and 6-2040130 at the same time, if you haven't yet considered it. Read More...

Jerome May 11, 2013 for Model Number Maytag A412 Series 04 We are experiencing the same staining of clothes a previous person asked about. I removed and cleaned the area under the agitator but did not take off the top to clean the tub. We are still experiencing the stains. So, how does the cover come off? Does it just lift off from the front? thanks...
1 Answer Jerome, To get to the top cover you will need to remove the front panel by taking the 2 screws out at the bottom of the panel. Roll the panel out front the bottom and unclip from the top. Once you have the front panel off you will remove 2 screws that hold the side panels to the top. Once removed, lift the main top of the unit and there will be clips around the side of the tub that you unlatch to remove the tub cover. Read More...
