The Mounting Stem Repair Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It includes all necessary components to repair the mounting stem, which is a critical part of the washer's tub support system. Comes with the hub assembly, seal, and spanner nut. 6-2040130 should also be replaced at the same time. A spanner wrench is required to complete the repair TB123B.

Symptoms of a bad mounting stem include:

  • Excessive noise or vibration during the spin cycle.
  • The washer tub appearing loose or off-balance.
  • Leakage around the central area of the washer, indicating a possible seal failure.

Causes of a bad mounting stem can include wear and tear from normal usage, especially with heavy loads, or corrosion and material fatigue that weaken the stem's integrity.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Al for Model Number LAT9356AAE

Hello! I'm trying to replace the tub stem and seal but the upper nut securing the washer-cla won't budge. It has actually losened the stem, and therefore they turn together. I realize that in order to remove the inner tub I'd have to separate it from the outer tub. Even if I was able to remove the nut and stem as an assembly I'd still need to remove the nuts and bolts securing the braces. I don't want to apply any form of heat to the nut because the transmission shaft is plastic, and that would probably means spending more. Is there any other way I can go about doing this job other than having to call a repairman, or having to take it in for service? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al

Al, You will want to block the transmission at the bottom of the unit. Take a 2 x 4 and put across the 2 braces so that when the transmission meets it the transmission will not turn.

John for Model Number A412

I bought and replaced the stem and seal on a Maytag Washing Machine. The leak problem is solved. But, when I put the washer back together I ran into a couple problems. First, When I put the tub lid back on and tightened the ring, no matter how much I tighten the it, the lid can easily be pulled right off. Is that normal? Second, when the washer hits the spin cycle, the top of the inner tub is rubbing against the tub lid. I have tried to raise the tub lid a small amount. I have tightened the ring as small as it will go. This solves the rubbing problem, but when the spin cycle starts it knocks the tub lid right off. It can't stay on. What am I doing wrong???

Hello John, Try putting a very small quantity of liquid soap on the inside of the metal ring, (not the rubber gasket). This will allow the ring to slip on the rubber and tight all the way around instead of just tightening at the screw. If you put too much the rubber gasket will slip too easily and cause you more issues. Also, use rubbing alcohol on the outer tub where the rubber seal contacts to prevent its' moving.

Teetot, The bearing isn't likely. You'll need to remove the front panel and check the damper pads 203956 and damper 203725. If the pads are worn and or sticking out between the damper and the base, this allows, the friction and movement of the tub to transfer into the base and cause the machine to vibrate, shake, and walk. It's actually a somewhat easy, inexpensive repair, if that's the issue.

Hello Chris, It may be that the tub bearing 6-2040130 is bad. When the tub bearing goes bad there will be a loud grinding type noise.

Dennis, To do this repair properly, you'll need to repalce the tub bearing kit 6-2040130 and the tub seal kit 6-2095720 together. A cracked or broken "carbon" ring, is a good indication of over torquing the mounting stem, or improper installation. Remember, when you install the "boot" make sure it is level and properly seated on the tub flange, and when installing the mounting stem/tub support do not over torque it (hand tighten with the spanner wrench, then a light tap with the hammer, or the ball of your fist is enough torque), and put the washer through the final spin cycle (no water) to seat the seal ring properly.

Hello Jimtone. Remove the two screws at the bottom of the front panel and pull the panel forward to remove it from the unit. Now you can check for leaks.

Hi. Before you order the mount stem / seal kit... Remove the agitator fabric softener cup. Loosen the agitator lower side 1/4" bolt and lift up and off with the agitator. Look under the agitator and clean all fabric softener builds up inside. You need to use a screwdriver or a putty knife to ease removal. Use a bottle brush. First old softener will turn dark blue-green-brown-then black and it will make a person think the exact issue you described. Lift the top. Unclasp the top tub ring and clean all build up inside the inner - outer tub at the top of the outer tub as well. Spray scrubbing bubbles on the back side of the top ring and let set while cleaning the rest. Use washer magic cleaner part# TJ131 monthly to clean internal tub, pump and hoses. Thank You.

Installation of the Mounting Stem Repair Kit. I think I can figure it out but I want to ask anyway. For me, I break fewer parts that way. I have already removed the internal parts, retaining ring, washer, nut clamp& washer cla. I assume the top lid section needs to be removed and the inner tub removed. Any tips, things to pay close attention to, and/or advice/directions. also being that it is all apart now any way. Any other parts I should look at or simply replace as preventive maintenance. Thank you. Bill

Bill,You are intending to replace the mounting stem and tub bearing kit 6-2095720 and 6-2040130. You may want to consider a new set of belts 12112425 and some TJ055975 lubricant for the new bearing assembly. We'll send you some additional information that should be helpful, but you're on track so far
