The Rotor Position Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is responsible for monitoring the position and speed of the rotor, ensuring the motor operates correctly to perform various washing cycles. The sensor sends precise data to the washing machine's control board, which adjusts the motor's function accordingly.

Causes of a bad rotor position sensor can include electrical failures, wear and tear over time, or physical damage from impact or moisture exposure. When this sensor fails, it disrupts the communication between the motor and control board, leading to operational issues.

Symptoms of a bad rotor position sensor include:

  • The washing machine not spinning or agitating
  • Error codes indicating motor issues
  • The machine stopping mid-cycle
  • Unusual noises coming from the motor area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hi Brian. Is your stand pipe above the unit correctly in height? Is the drain hose in the pipe with an air gap. Is the pump needing disassembled to clean and see if the impeller is not loose spinning on the shaft? The pump is part # W10536347. Remove the hose from the pressure switch. Blow backwards into the tub. Was there any lint or suds restriction there? The code F-51. The code 5-d is actually a S-D suds over fill code. If the pressure switch is not reset by clearing the restriction, it will give the codes. The pressure switch is part # WPW10268788 it is built into the control board. The water valve if it does not close it will overfill. Start a normal cycle and simply unplug the machine. If it still fills with water then shut the house supply valve off and replace the valve part # is W10364988. Keep rinsing and pumping the suds out until there is clear water fill. Push in the front upper panel clips with a putty knife and lift the top supporting it also. Then unsnap the top tub ring/ cover . Is there anything (clothes) bunched up in between the inner tub and outer tub? An overloaded tub will "float" and bunch up stopping the tub from spinning. Remove the motor rotor and inspect the magnets for cracks or misplacement's. The stator windings will ohm out to 33 Ohm's. Make sure the RPS- Sensor is placed correctly and electrical connections. You should see the unit tech. sheet inside the front at the top of the tub to aid you in all these checks. Please let us know how this all turns out. Thank you.

Hello Ray. Based on the code you provided, it sounds like the RPS sensor WPW10178988 is bad and will need to be replaced. Check and make sure the tub turns freely and there is nothing between the inner and outer tubs. Hope this helps.

Hello Wes. You will need to go from the bottom of the washer to replace this part. You will need to remove the rotor 280146 and the stator WPW10419333, to replace the sensor. Hope this helps.
