The Rotor Position Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is responsible for monitoring the position and speed of the rotor, ensuring the motor operates correctly to perform various washing cycles. The sensor sends precise data to the washing machine's control board, which adjusts the motor's function accordingly.

Causes of a bad rotor position sensor can include electrical failures, wear and tear over time, or physical damage from impact or moisture exposure. When this sensor fails, it disrupts the communication between the motor and control board, leading to operational issues.

Symptoms of a bad rotor position sensor include:

  • The washing machine not spinning or agitating
  • Error codes indicating motor issues
  • The machine stopping mid-cycle
  • Unusual noises coming from the motor area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Jeremy, You will want to make sure that your pressure hose is fully seated on the control board and make sure that you check it for clogs or breaks in it. This would normally be the case in an overflow issue.

Hello Michael. The bearings are bad. You will need to order and replace the outer tub assembly W10193886 on the unit. You can replace just the bearings W10435302, but will need to order the tool W10447783 and it is a lot harder repair.

Jason G for Model Number MAytag MVWB300WQ0

When we load our washer and start a normal cycle it will count down to 32 min while filling up with water and then stay at 32 min. The tub will continue to fill up almost all the way. Then the timer will jump to 4 min. The tub will drain and beep twice with an oL display. I know this is a message code for "Over load" but it does it every time. Clothes or no clothes. What could be the reason for this happening and what would be the fix?

1 Answer

Jason, First check and make sure the top of the drain standpipe is at leasr 38 to 39 inches up from the floor, if it's an inch or two too low, the water will syphon out. If the standpipe is high enough, and the end of the drain hose is not "stuffed" or sealed to the pipe, then you want to check the eleectronic control board WPW10258402 and air dome tube WP353244.

Hello Mertie. Disconnect the power and lean the unit back and lossen the bolt from the center of the rotor all the way. Then pull the rotor off the stator assembly. This will be very tight due to the magnets. Once removed, you will remove the wires from the sensor and remove the sensor from the unit. Then install the new sensor WPW10178988 in reverse order.

Hello Steve. I have to agree that this is probably the rotor position sensor WPW10178988. I would strongly advise to check all your connections at the control and the rps end of the harness as I have seen this problem caused often by a bad connection. I wouldn't bother changing the rps without changing the wiring harness W10184256 at the same time as the dis-assembly for the rps is the same at the bottom of the unit as the dis-assembly for the harness. I sure hope this helps!

Hi Brian. Not a related issue. UL code is because of a un balanced load. The code will go away under normal circumstances. The F-51 code is because of the rps sensor bad or a wiring connection in the same circuit being open. Check this also. Part # WPW10178988. Thank You.
