The Rotor Position Sensor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is responsible for monitoring the position and speed of the rotor, ensuring the motor operates correctly to perform various washing cycles. The sensor sends precise data to the washing machine's control board, which adjusts the motor's function accordingly.

Causes of a bad rotor position sensor can include electrical failures, wear and tear over time, or physical damage from impact or moisture exposure. When this sensor fails, it disrupts the communication between the motor and control board, leading to operational issues.

Symptoms of a bad rotor position sensor include:

  • The washing machine not spinning or agitating
  • Error codes indicating motor issues
  • The machine stopping mid-cycle
  • Unusual noises coming from the motor area

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Rotor Position Sensor (Part Number: OEM18049140)

Ash

My question is regarding F51 code appearance. We have F51 code appearing during wash, immediately 5-10min, water fill, before drum starts to move. We replaced RPS sensor "WPW10178988" attached to rotary, 2 times (one year back and other 1.5 year back). After replacing sensor , it did started to work fine. But now after a year , same F51 is appearing. Now, question here is - Is it correct to replace RPS sensor again, within 1 year of replacement. ? - Is their something else that can be causing . We can see small crack at 1 or 2 on rotary , But can that cause F51 code to appear after an year again. ?? Since this small crack is there from couple of years now. ?? Additionally, during spin, washer makes lot of storm like noise. What can be causing that ??? Please advise.

Hello Ash, the fault code refers to the main control board not detecting a signal from the motor's Rotor Position Sensor, this can occur if the motor is not turning, the sensor is faulty or there is a problem with the wiring to the motor or sensor. For any further help please include the model number.

Aso, You will want to check the hub of the washer as the OL indicates an overload. This means that too much was clothing was put into the unit or that the hub is not releasing to allow the unit to operate properly.

Brandon, That code flashes when the control detects or thinks there is an unbalanced load. So if it flashes with no clothes present it would be a faulty control. W10763749

Michael, the tub bearings and driveshaft will need to be inspected for corrosion. If there is corrosion on the driveshaft or sleeve, the bearing and tub seal kit W10435302 would need to be replaced using the installation tool kit W10447783.

Jim for Model Number MVWB450WQ2

I have a Maytag washer model MVWB450WQ2 and the UL error keeps appearing no matter what I do to clear it. I had followed some online videos and it was suggested the motor position sensor could be the issue. I have tested the voltages at the main control board end and the 15 and 5 volts appear on the connector. Any suggestions how to test this sensor or could be some other fault I'm not aware of. I was going to remove the stator but reading some other comments it could be the bowl not seating properly due to worn bearings? Any suggestions.

1 Answer

Hello Jim, the rotor position sensor only signals the board for motor speed and direction of rotation. Feedback signals from the motor windings to the board, are interpreted by the board as a balanced/unbalanced load. If the code is showing every load that can be caused by a clothes basket that can no longer center itself or worn spin bearings. You can pull out the basket and check if the center opening that goes over the shaft is worn, if not then its the spin bearings may be binding/dragging.

Cal for Model Number WTW8900BC0

Hello, I have a whirlpool cabrio platinum wtw8900bc0, and recently it stopped working when attempting to spin. After powering it OFF, I tried to manually spin the basket and impeller, and both would not budge. They used to be able to spin freely. After putting the washer in diagnostic mode, the error code F51 pops up. Putting it into the diagnostic tests (C0, C1, etc), everything seems to be fine (rinse, drain) except for the SPIN. It simply doesn't spin at all, and the basket and impeller appear "stuck". One final test I did was to put it into a RINSE/SPIN cycle (which started at 25min) with no clothing/detergent, and it never finished the cycle due to it's inability to spin. Again, RINSE, DRAIN all worked, but not SPIN. Eventually, it popped an "SD" suds detection error, restarted the RINSE, drain, etc. I eventually cancelled/turned off the machine after 45minutes, put it into diagnostic mode, and again F51 popped up. I took the basket out, checked the plastic couplers that attach the impeller to the stem, and all seemed fine. (No clothing impeding the basket, stem, etc. and no "play" on the washers.). Does this mean I need a new RPS sensor?

1 Answer

Cal, Tilt the unit back and access the rotor and stator, check to make sure that there is nothing impeding them and that the RPS sensor is in the correct position and not loose. If this checks ok but the tub will not spin freely then it sounds as though the bearings on the unit have seized up. The bearing part number will be W10435302.

Pro, if the model number for your appliance could be provided in a new inquiry, this will allow for the most accurate information to be presented. However, as a general test, you may want to test each wire on the wiring harness from end to end for continuity. From the information provided, it sounds like there may be a wire issue.

G Thomas, SD is a suds detection, this may signify a load is bunched or twisted around the agitator, there is excessive detergent that was used, even a problem with the basket not turning freely due to friction on the drive mechanism, and not allowing the basket to engage.

Jason for Model Number WTW6400SW3

At the end of a wash cycle and enters the spin cycle the washer drain, and i can hear the agitator moving but the washer never spins up and give a sd(f71) error. I have done the automatic test and at C8 test, the drum never spins but the agitator does as expected. I did a manual test of the motor and the drum spins up on all three settings. I reset the washer and tried a drain and spin and the drum will not spin. I am not sure what part I would need to fix this issue! What would be the best part to start with to fix this issue. Thank you, Jason

1 Answer

Jason, If the tub will spin in the diagnostic mode but will not in the normal cycle then this would be a faulty control board.

Jerry, you will want to check the rps and stator yes. You will also want to check the bearing assembly as you have what is known as a floating basket. Over time, the basket will catch on the drive shaft not allowing it to seat down properly when the water is draining. If the basket is catching on the shaft, it will cause the UL error to occur. If the basket is catching, you will want to use the bearing kit part number [W10435302] along with the tool kit [W10447783].
