The Drain Pump is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for expelling water from the washing machine at the end of the wash and rinse cycles. Its motor and impeller system push water through the drain hose, helping to ensure that the washing machine empties completely.

Symptoms of a failing drain pump include:

  • Water not draining out of the washing machine, leading to stagnant water pooled inside the tub
  • Unusual noises, such as buzzing or humming, indicating that the pump motor is struggling
  • The washing machine stopping mid-cycle due to inability to drain

Causes of drain pump failure typically include obstruction by foreign objects like coins or socks, motor burnout, or impeller damage. Regular maintenance, such as checking for debris in the pump's filter, can help prevent these issues.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

John, Your particular washer has a "floating" spin basket. When the tub fills with water the tub floats up about 3/8 in. when the washer drains, the tub engages the drive hub on the shaft and the tub spins. You'll need to remove the spin basket and check the "teeth" on the drive hub on the drive shaft and on the bottom of the spin basket. The teeth could be clogged with sediment and debris, or possibly "stripped" not engaging and causing the noise and no spin.

Hello Jose. It sounds like the unit is not spinning out properly. You will need to make sure you don't have a balance issue and the inner tub is floating up and down as it should.

Patrick for Model Number MVWB400VQ0

I had a repair man come out to look at my Maytag washer. Once you turn on the machine you hear a grinding noise. Water does go into the machine and the water does seem to drain but right before the spin cycle the grinding noise comes back. The repair man said it is the water pump and it would be $400 for the part and labor for a 10 year old machine. There are two pump involved, which one could it be? From your web site they both seem very easy to repair. There is no leaking water under the machine.

1 Answer

Patrick, Just because the unit is not leaking does not mean that the pump could not be bad. The fact that it is not draining and is making a loud grinding noise would indicate that the pump would be faulty. You would want to replace the drain pump [AP565269].

Michelle for Model Number WTW6400SW3

We just replaced our drain pump model W10049390 with part W10536347. Everything went smoothly, though there are some minor differences in both. It seems to be working flawlessly, draining with no problem, but my goodness, the sound. This sucker is LOUD. At some points during the wash cycle you'll hear it, but it's mainly at the end, around the same time as the spin cycle, but not always during (they don't appear to be related). The bearings and tub are fine, you can definitely tell that this is where the sound is coming from. It's almost a skipping, whirring sound... very hard to describe. But not grinding. I've seen others comment about it being louder, could this be normal? Or could I have a defective part? Thank you so much for any assistance!

1 Answer

Michelle, It would not be uncommon for this to be normal as there may be a difference in how the motor is designed.

Jerry D. for Model Number Maytag Bravos HE washer M#MTW6700TQ1 Type 850

My washer makes a humming sound after the washing cycle (sense/wash/rinse/spin) is complete and the "Clean" light is on then goes off. It hums for up to ten minutes after then shuts off. To be clear, the washer has finished the load but something keeps on running. I have pulled the power to stop the machine from humming/running. When I plug it back in it will make a gurgling sound from the drain pipe. I have previously pulled the basket out to make sure there was nothing clogging the inside of the washer. Also, I pulled out the pumps and found no blockages I could see. Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Jerry, You should first use the on board diagnostics to pull any fault codes. This should point you in the correct direction for repair. If the unit is not draining, there is a good possibility of a bad drain pump W10536347 motor or a piece of debris in the pump.
