The Drain Pump is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This component is responsible for expelling water from the washing machine at the end of the wash and rinse cycles. Its motor and impeller system push water through the drain hose, helping to ensure that the washing machine empties completely.

Symptoms of a failing drain pump include:

  • Water not draining out of the washing machine, leading to stagnant water pooled inside the tub
  • Unusual noises, such as buzzing or humming, indicating that the pump motor is struggling
  • The washing machine stopping mid-cycle due to inability to drain

Causes of drain pump failure typically include obstruction by foreign objects like coins or socks, motor burnout, or impeller damage. Regular maintenance, such as checking for debris in the pump's filter, can help prevent these issues.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Drain Pump (Part Number: OEM16950816)

Michelle, The LD error flashes when the water level does not change after the drain pump is on. Is the drain hose or the drain pump clogged? Is the drain hose height greater than 96"? Is the pressure hose connection from the tub to the machine/motor control pinched, kinked, plugged, or leaking air? Is the pump running? If running is it pumping water?

Mike for Model Number MVWB450WQ1

My washer is making a very loud noise while draining. The pump is fine, and does not make the noise when it is liquid full, but when it gets to the end of draining, and the spin cycle is trying to get the last bit of water out of the clothes, the pump starts making a really loud noise. I know pumps typically make noises at this part of the cycle, because they are pumping air and water, but the noise has gotten really loud lately. I took apart my washer, a couple weeks ago, and there was nothing stuck in the pump, so I know it’s not that. Plus when it drains, and it’s liquid full, it doesn’t make a noise. It’s not until it’s running low on water to pump. Any thoughts?

Mike, This will most likely be an issue with the pump. The impeller may be a bit wobbly and when it has completed the draining of water, this would cause the impeller to start wobbling while spinning which would cause the noise. You will want to replace the drain pump for this issue.

Don, Thanks for the question!!! Remove the motor stator and check around the seals and bearings in the tub bottom for the leak. I would not replace the pump until I verified where the leak was coming from.

Steve, WIth the drain pump and control board having been replaced, you will want to check wiring between the pump and the control board for damaged wires or connectors.

Steve, Check to make sure that there is no damage to the hub assembly and check to make sure that the drum is turning freely. If the hub is damaged then it will need to be replaced and if the tub will not turn by hand then check for anything that would keep the tub from turning.

Unit would not spin. Went to drain and spin and it worked ok for a time or two, but then displayed SD, suds. It seemed like the water was gone but still would not spin. Changed the pump and would not pass 12 minutes on the drain and spin cycle. We tried affresh to clean the unit in the past, so we tried it again and it goes from 1 hour to 59 minutes then to 3 minutes and sits there draining. Are we needing a control or is there something I'm missing here? Thanks Ken

1 Answer

Hello Ken, this is a floating basket design, during drain mode the basket has to drop down on the driveshaft and reengage the hub driver, anything that prevents this the control will display SD as it thinks there is excess suds preventing a full drain and the basket is still floating up from the hub driver. You will have to access and remove the basket and check for a rag between the tubs or problems with the drive shaft (corrosion ).

Hello Gloria, suggest you access and remove the clothes basket at this point, check under it for any clothing and also inspect the driveshaft the basket slides on, lastly check under the washer that the motor rotor is not hanging up on anything, and stator for any cracks.

Barry for Model Number WTW6800WW1

Much thanks to the Pros at AppliancePartsPros.com, I asked under "Bearing and Tub Seal Kit" about my noise, and sure enough they were right! So I pulled the pump, gave it a shake and out came a very chewed up penny (which otherwise may ultimately have won the fight with the pump!). Not a hard job, 90% dealing with having to disconnect and move dryer as well as washer, and spin washer around (and deal with the water which spills from the tub). Taking the pump off was easy, there was only an extra screw and washer keeping an electrical conduit in place, had to be removed to slide up the upper hose clamp (screw not described in video). But as ever one jobs turns into another. On the bottom of the washer (which with it flipped was the front), there were these pieces which I cannot identify or find in the parts. The two larger pieces split apart on the vertical as soon as I touched, I scotch taped them back together for show. The are somewhat curved like they'd be around a 2-3" diameter pipe. The back side is smooth and sticky like it was stuck on something. At the time I thought they were part of absorbers, so I popped the top when I was done, to find nothing at all like these. My fear is they are part of some additional absorber/protectors, and if I don't remedy their absence something else is going to break/crack/leak. Can someone identify these and tell me if I'm heading for trouble! Here's a link to the picture, with the actual removed chewed up penny (for scale): https://i.redd.it/wlg7iajr0f651.jpg

Hello Barry, we are unable to either locate that part or identify it, also there is no mention of it in any service manual. It appears to be a dampening pad either for noise or excessive movement of the tub or a wire harness or drain tube.
