This auxiliary relay is an electrical switch used by the control to route line voltage to high-demand components. Replacing a weak or failed relay restores reliable power delivery for consistent heating and fan operation, depending on the model.

  • Switches power to elements, fans, or other high-load components when signaled by the control
  • Offloads high current from the electronic control for durability and reliability
  • Common symptoms can include: oven not heating or heating intermittently; element or blower won't run; audible clicking with no heat; discoloration or melting at relay terminals
  • Supports stable operation by providing a dedicated, serviceable switching point in the circuit
What's included: 1 auxiliary relay Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker and verify no voltage before servicing
  • Access the relay near the control/wiring harness; note its mounting orientation
  • Move wires one at a time to matching terminals; ensure snug spade connections and repair any heat-damaged wiring
  • Secure the relay, reassemble panels, restore power, and test operation

For Whirlpool Auxiliary Relay (Part Number: OEM18032538)

Kelvin for Model Number MER6872BCW

In my double oven the lower bake element of the upper oven is not receiving current. When oven is turned on only the broil element comes on and then turns off when the set temp is reached. All elements and thermostats have proper conductivity. Could it be the relay WP74003482 Lower oven and all burners are working normally. Testing for voltage at both rear clips of the bake element for upper oven doesn't show any current. Whereas all others have current when turned on.

1 Answer

Kelvin, The auxiliary Relay is for the L2 side of the bake and broils element and if the relay was faulty then neither would work. This issue would be caused by a faulty control board which is part number WP5701M406-60. Unfortunately, this control has been discontinued and no suitable replacement available.

Hi. I just replaced this relay and it worked great for about 10 minutes and then the oven became erratic again and the buzzing from the relay is back. I'm assuming the problem is not the relay. Is the relay now ruined? Could the problem be one of the elements? They look fine, and I did a continuity test when I had the back off of the oven. Do I have to remove the elements to get an accurate reading? I've had the stove for at least 14 years and have never changed out the top burner, only the bottom. Thanks for your help.

Jim, You will need to test voltages coming to the relay to find the issue. This is a double line break relay. It is responsible for supplying one side [120 VAC] to both the bake and broil elements. In the NO terminal, you should find 120 VAC coming to the relay. On the common split terminal, there should be 120 on each wire.It is hard to say if the new relay is ruined. The elements should be tested for resistance and a reading of 10 -50 ohms is acceptable.

Carl, The relay is held in just by a couple screws. The wiring should be able to be switch from one to the other. This relay will be on the back side of the control panel.

Marty for Model Number JDS9861AAP

Oven wouldn't heat above 250, and broiler element also had very low heat. Replaced auxiliary relay at rear of oven which solved the problem for about a week, but then failed. Replaced both the relay and the control board. Everything worked fine for another few days, then a bright arc from the oven, which tripped the breaker. Now loud humming from the rear relay, which seems to have burned out again, and low heat in the oven and broiler. Clock and display still work fine.

1 Answer

Marty, You will want to check the oven elements to make sure that that elements are not blown out. This would be the most likely cause for this issue.
