The Drum Seal is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This seal is located around the edge of the dryer drum and is designed to prevent clothes from getting caught between the drum and the dryer cabinet. It also helps to retain heat within the drum, ensuring efficient drying performance.

Over time, the drum seal can wear out or become damaged due to the high temperatures and constant friction involved in the drying process. If the seal fails, it can lead to inefficient drying and potential damage to clothing.

Symptoms of a bad drum seal include:

  • Clothes getting snagged or torn during the drying cycle
  • Longer drying times due to heat loss
  • Increased noise from the dryer
  • Visible wear or gaps in the seal

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Drum Seal (Part Number: OEM11620851)

Susan for Model Number WED8200YW1

We've got light brown streaks appearing on our clothes after they have been in the dryer. This happened once before a couple of years ago and we had a professional come out ($265! ouch!) to replace the felt drum seal. Unfortunately, I did not make note of which seal (front or back) he replaced. My husband wants to attempt this repair himself this time -- is there a way to know whether the front or back (or both) seal needs to be replaced before opening it all up?

Susan, the rear and front drum seal uses the same part number, 280140. What happens is the seals will start to rust out and when clothes get caught in between the seal the the bulkhead, it pinches the clothes and leaves a rust mark on the clothes. I would replace the front and rear seal at the same time. Make sure you clean the rust off the bulkhead as well.

Mark, Your dryer doesn't have drum slides, yours have front and rear drum rollers WPW10314173, they can make a light metal on metal noise when the shaft or bearing get dry. You may want to check and make sure there's not a button, zipper, etc. stuck in or between the drum seal and bulkhead that can also make a noise similar to your description.

Hello Kevin. To remove the drum, you must raise the top and remove the front panel and front bulk head.
