The Spark Module Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool ranges. It is responsible for generating the spark needed to ignite the gas burners on the cooktop. The spark module sends electrical signals to the igniters, creating the spark that lights the gas for cooking.

Over time, the spark module can fail due to electrical issues, exposure to moisture, or normal wear and tear. When the spark module becomes faulty, it can lead to various problems with igniting the burners.

Symptoms of a bad spark module include:

  • Burners not lighting or taking a long time to light
  • No clicking sound when turning the burner knob
  • Burners only lighting intermittently
  • Visible sparks or arcing from the module

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

NOTE: This part is only compatible with serial numbers starting with 21 and up on model 8351VV.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spark Module Kit (Part Number: OEM12030111)

Larry, There will most likely be screws around the perimeter of the cooktop that will hold the main top to the burner box. You will need to lift the cooktop out of the cabinet to get to them.

Mavis, the burners are replaceable and are part number WP3403M075-10 and the ignitors are part number 74004053. However, it would be recommended that the ignitors are tested for continuity (with power disconnected from the appliance). If there is continuity, the ignitors are good. The clicking would indicate that power is being sent to the ignitors and if they are not sparking, it is likely that there is a block preventing it from sparking onto the burner (rust can cause this).

Hello Nick, the problem with answering your question is that on these older style ranges, the cooktop burner spark modules could be in several different locations. One way to find it is to pull the stove out , access the rear area and look under the cooktop and follow the spark wires from the burner ignitors back to the spark module.

George, the spark module 12001596 can be accessed by removing the grates, and then the corner covers of the top panel. Once the covers are removed, there will be two screws on each side that will need to be removed, allowing the cooktop panel to be removed and gaining access to the burner manifold section.

Hello Ken, Start by turning off the gas supply to the stove then using a multimeter check if there is 120v at the spark module, tan and white wires, located under the cooktop when you turn on any of the cooktop ignitor switches to the "light" setting". If 120v is there replace the spark module 8215557 if not there unplug the line cord for the stove and access the ignitor switches that are located on the top burner valve shafts and check if any wires have come loose.

Peter, Check at the oven safety valve for 3.2 to3.6 VAC when the oven is set to bake. If there is proper voltage then the issue will be a faulty safety valve. If there is not proper voltage then the issue will be a weak igniter.

Hello Jim, your 5 burner cooktop uses spark module WP74004282 for 4 of the burners and spark module WP74004282 for the 5 th burner . They are different parts. They are jumped together on the 120v input wiring so that they both provide a spark to all the burners when any of the burner valves are turned to the light/spark position.

Hello Mike, The issue of the ignitors continuing to spark after the burner is lit is quite common and normally does not require any parts to repair. First I will explain how the units with the reignition feature are designed to operate since it is necessary to understand how it works to fully understand why it acts this way when not operating properly. For safety reasons the unit is designed to spark all ignitors at the same time in case something were to be miswired and a surface burner is turned on and gas is coming in but the spark is too far away for ignition to occur because the spark is occurring on another surface burner, creating an explosion danger. Since all of the burners are designed to spark at the same time, this eliminates the possibility of a gas accumulation in the room that the spark can ignite if miswired. Next, the spark module is actually sensing the very low resistance of the flame and turns off the sparking when the flame is present. If the flame goes out, the spark module senses the larger resistance of the absence of the flame and will try to restart the flame by sparking all surface burner ignitors again. If a spill occurs or an increase in resistance between the metal pieces of the cooktop from normal corrosion, the resistance is increased enough that the spark module cannot sense the small resistance of the flame and will spark all of the ignitors to prevent the explosion hazard. Technicians refer to this as "dropping ground" for the surface burners. Correction of the issue includes disassembly of the cooktop and cleaning, (best with sandpaper), between the connection points of the metal parts of the cooktop so when the screws are reinserted, electrical continuity is re-established between the chassis and all of the parts connected in turn to the burner base. This is so chassis ground will be electrically provided to the burner base for the spark module to sense the presence of the flame and will eliminate the sparking. We hope this information helps you in your repair and thank you for your inquiry.

SL, Unfortunately we do not have anything that would work for removing old oil. The part numbers that you would need is WP74006156 for the right and WPY04100188 for the left. You would remove the main top to change them so the unit will have to be removed from the cabinet and remove the screws around the perimeter.
