Rod, the rod inside of the element is a thermal limiter. The limiter is a safety device that opens up if the element exceeds safe operating temperatures. When the element reaches around 250°F, it will also close the contacts for the surface hot indicator. It can only be replaced by replacing the element.

Karen, with the breaker turned off, it would be recommended that the wires are all inspected for any burn marks or indications of bare wire grounding out. With the element being on regardless of the switch being off, the front left switch WP8286070 has failed and would need to be replaced.

Andy for Model Number GJC3034LB01

The blue infinite switch (AP6014019) on my cooktop does not turn. I opened up the unit and the infinite switch was not screwed in - it fell right out of its mount. I can not get this switch to screw in correctly. I have tried the original mounting screws and new screws to no avail. There is also a gray rubber pad and a smaller bendable metal piece that appear to rest on top of the switch. I have tried taking these pieces off as well and still can not get the switch to screw in properly. From what I can tell, the holes the screws are supposed to go into are not very deep. Any help is appreciated.

Andy, Based on your post information and description, You'll need to replace the switch WP9759474 and the screws WP486579. the predrilled and threaded mounting holes in the switch have been damaged or cross threaded and the mounting screws can't be driven properly or will not hold the switch in place.you'll want to replace the screws because they are a specific length, and a screw that's too long, can damage the internal switch components and could be dangerous. As long as the WP486579 seal is intact it can be re used. We're not aware of a "smaller bendable metal piece that appears to rest on top of the switch". Could it be the metal insert from inside the shaft of the knob? or perhaps something metal that slipped under the knob and into the switch opening ?
