Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Infinite Switch (Dual Surface Element) (Part Number: OEM18064101)

Jim, the more likely issue is a weak or damaged internal contact inside the WP9763762 / WP9763762 Switch-Infinite. Was there any spillage or boil over that would or could've allowed water to migrate into the control panel and "short" the contacts or circuitry inside the switch?

This is not really a question, but rather a comment to help others. After replacing my infinite switch with the part from Appliance Parts Pro it worked perfectly, so thank you for providing your service. I disassembled the original switch and the reason the light was staying on was because the metal switch connected to a piece of plastic that lifts up to make the closed electrical connection when the knob is turned on was fused in the "on" or closed position. Apparently the reason we are all having this problem is that when you see and hear the electrical arc, it is fusing the switch in the closed position. Taking a small screwdriver I was able to pop it back open again though I will not reuse it as I don't know if the arcing will keep happening so better to buy a new switch. I'm just disappointed these Whirlpool switches keep fusing. This is my second one to do it and same issue each time. At a minimum, if you remove the switch and carefully open it up you can quickly see if yours is fused and buy a replacement here.

My wife went to turn on the dual burner and heard a loud pop and it tripped the breaker. Now the burner on light stays lit constantly, however all of the burners still come on include both parts of the dual burner (or the center if we use the other side). Since the pop happened when she turned on the dual burner and the burner itself works fine, is it safe to assume I need to replace the infinite switch to get the light to go off? Part # WPW10434447???

Will, Yes, the switch would need to be replaced and make sure no wires have come loose and touching another terminal or the back wall.

Greg Ogden for Model Number MEC7430BB02

We were using the stove bought in 2014 this past weekend and turned on the RF burner to single mode, then quickly turned it to dual mode as that was what was originally wanted. My wife saw a spark 'under the glass' and the fuse tripped upon resetting the fuse, the stovetop still works and the RF burner works as well (I haven't confirmed if both dual/single stage work, sorry) but the 'On LED light is intermittet depending on where the RF element knob is. so something appears to be loose/fried. Is there anything I can check ? or does this warrant buying a new switch?

Hello John, You should be able to mount the infinite switches in the metal mount and the holes should line up close enough to pass through the glass without touching the glass when they turn. If the infinite switch shaft contacts the glass, pick the glass back up and adjust the switches installation so it will not contact the glass. Do not install the glass top until the switches are properly positioned. (The screws are to be inserted with the glass top off of the unit, otherwise you could break the glass.)
