This rotary temperature selector switch mounts in the console and lets you choose the temperature setting for a cycle. Replacing a worn switch restores accurate response to the control knob so the appliance follows the temperature you select.

  • Converts the knob position into the correct electrical output for the chosen temperature level
  • Helps ensure the appliance responds to the temperature setting selected on the control panel
  • Common symptoms: only one temperature works, temperature won't change with the knob, selector feels loose or won't "click," intermittent temperature selection
  • Typical causes include worn internal contacts or a damaged switch shaft
What's included: 1 temperature selector switch Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Access the control console; remove the knob and retainers to free the switch
  • Photograph or label wire positions, then transfer connectors to the new switch one at a time
  • Secure the switch, reinstall the knob/panel, restore power, and test temperature selection

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Temperature Selector Switch (Rotary) (Part Number: OEM18712596)

Mike, the thermistor on the water valve WP3979345 can be tested for resistance from the purple wire to the orange wire on the temperature selector switch W11103599. However, the thermistor does not commonly fail and the most likely cause of failure would be the temperature selector switch.

Sam, this model is designed to use the cold water valve even when set to hot and the water will be cooler than what would be expected. If the water temperature is more than 15°F cooler from the water heater temperature setting, the thermister of the valve assembly W11038689 would need to be tested for resistance. It should measure 62K Ohms at 68°F, 50K Ohms at 77°F, 40K Ohms at 86°F, and 33K Ohms at 95°F. If the thermistor tests good, then the main control W11498190 would be the likely failure.

Dutch, the temperature switch is going to operate the hot valve during any temperature selection other than cold wash as this is how it maintains the temperature. As the cold valve is turning off, the hot valve should be engaging. If the hot valve is not receiving voltage when the cold water is cycled off, then the temperature switch [W11103599] would be the issue.

Hal, You will want to check to see if there is 120 vac getting to the water valve. If it is getting proper power then this will be a faulty water valve. if there is no power then the temp switch would most likely be the issue.

Hello Justin. If you switched the hoses around on the back of the washer, it should resolve the issue. The washer should be set up to power the cold water valve on all rinses. We will need your model number to help you with this. Please call 1-877-477-7278 or post your model number with a new question on the parts page. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx

Ben for Model Number wet3300sq1

When I start the washing machine it acts like the valves are opening and closing while letting the water in...Doesn't matter when I change the temperature setting.. It still behaves in this manner.... on/off on/off on/off Very strange....Also It does not fill with water when it goes into rinse cycle... in fact the valves don't even open...It seems that everything else works...it will spin and drain...Could it be just the Temperature switch, the solenoids, or the timer...My money is on the Temperature switch...Please let me know before I order.. Thanks

Ben, You will want to check the screws on the water valve to make sure that they are not clogged and if they heck ok then the valve would be the most likely issue.

Yamil for Model Number WET3300SQ0

Hi I am watching my washing machine only works with cold water despite having hot water supply. Turn the knob to warm and hot water and cold water just enter. The strange thing is that putting it in hot water also enters cold water. Check the valve and solenoids are OK, check the power supply to the valve and note that only reaches current terminal cold water, switch the terminal cold water and connect to the solenoid hot water and it worked perfectly, but by connecting the terminal to the solenoid hot water cold water, did nothing. will the temperature switch is damaged or have something to do with the thermistor valve? Thank and advance

Yamil, The most likely cause for your unit only filling with cold water will be a faulty temperature control switch.

Katie for Model Number Whirlpool Ywet3300sq1

Hi, we have a whirlpool stackable set (model Ywet3300sq1) and over the past few months the cold and hot water was reversed on occasion - now it is all the time, with boiling hot water coming out on the cold setting. Unfortunately because all temperature cycles have a "cold water rinse" all my clothes are being washed in boiling water. Originally the water lines were hooked up wrong. We corrected that issue and it seemed fine. But then every few cycles the water temperature would go off again - and then it would be fine. We replaced the temperature switch, but it is still coming out with the wrong temperature of water. That didn't seem to correct the issue at all. Any suggestions?

1 Answer

Katie, You will want to check to make sure that the wires connected to the valve are not reversed. On one of the harnesses there is a Yellow wire with a red stripe which will go to the cold water valve. Make sure that the wires are not crossed. It is possible that you received a fautly ATC switch W11103599 but would be more likely the wires reversed at the valve.

Owen for Model Number YWET3300SQ2

My water is warm whether I set the temperature as Cold, Warm, or Hot. I already double checked the hose connection to ensure Hot and Cold hook up is correct. To diagnose the issue, I manually shut down the cold water, and the water became hot. But as long as both lines are connected, the wash cycle is only dispensing warm water in all the settings. Will this Thermal Switch fix the above issue? Could it be the valve in the back of the washer where the hose connect has gone bad?

1 Answer

Hello Owen. This model uses a valve WP3979345 with a thermistor. It is designed to mix the hot and cold no matter the settings on it. If this problem just started, then you can replace the temp switch, but keep in mind, even if set to cold, it will mix in hot to break the soap down. Thanks.

Paul, With the same issue occurring as before the replacement of the water valve would be an issue with the ATC switch W11103599.
