The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

Denise, You will want to check the thermistor for continuity. The thermistor should not show open or infinite reading. If it is showing as infinite then it is faulty.

When my Whirlpool Cabrio dryer was just over 1 year old, it stopped. It would click and the sensing light would come on but it would not start. After some research the thermal fuse was replaced and it worked for a short while; then F22 began coming on. It would work for a while on some loads before the code would appear. My son replaced the thermistor #8577274 in December. It has the code F22 again and will not run more than 1 minute before stopping with this code. Should I just replace the thermistor again or is there something else cause this to happen?

Hello Megan. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Hello Michael, You need to pull the tech sheet and run the diagnostics to pull any fault codes. The tech sheet should be in the control panel in this unit. If not, re-post and we can send you a copy. It sounds like the control board 280071 is the issue.

Dave, You will want to check the door switch and check the resistance of the thermistor as both could be the issue.

Charles, If you got a infinity reading on the thermistor then you will want to double check with the resistance set for a higher reading. Put on 20K and see if you get a reading and if still the same then the thermistor is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Hello Dave. No, if the thermistor is bad, you can not bypass it. It must be replaced.

Hi I'm trying to track a problem on a whirlpool Cabrio dryer. The problem is a lot of clothes come out extremly wrinkled. We just replaced the thermal fuse cause it was missing/bypassed. We purchased this unit used and werent aware of the thermal fuse missing till we started having problems. After installing the new thermal fuse it worked fine for a week then it blew. I'm thinking it is the thermister , allowing the dryer to run too hot, causing the fuse to blow. I removed the thermister and it reads 15k ohms. It says it should read 10k , so is this my problem? Thanks Mike

Hello Mike. The thermistor is testing bad. However, if it blows again, you will need to replace the control board WPW10111617 on the unit.
