The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

Cody for Model Number WGD9200SQ0

I have a gas dryer, which I cleaned inside and out to increase the airflow. When i set the dryer to the highest temperature, the igniter glows and the flame starts for a couple minutes and reaches 168 degrees, then shuts off. At 114 degrees the igniter starts, then at 108 degrees the gas ignites until it reaches 168 degrees. This was monitored at the rear exhaust with a simple thermometer. It continues this cycle throughout the drying process. Is this related to the thermistor? Everything appears to check out fine.

Cody, This is the natural design of the unit as the unit has a cycling thermostat that will allow the unit to cycle off and on.

Damian, Based on your post information, the most likely issue is a weak gas valve coil 279834. Since the gas valve ignition system cycles on and off for the first few cycles, the igniter and flames switch should be OK, The wiring inside the coils is weak and after a while the coils cannot lift the plunger and release and ignite the gas. Replace the coils and you should be fine.

Hello Dave. First check and see if the breaker is weak and needs to be replaced. If not, it sounds like the motor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit. It sounds like it is over heating and is causing the issue if the breaker is good.

Hello Lane, The only thing that can make the unit advance in timed dry and not advance in the auto dry cycles is the exhaust duct. If the duct is crimped or clogged, the unit will continue to sense the same moisture since it cannot get it out of the dryer and will run forever. To test the theory, dis-connect the duct from the back of the unit and you will see the timer advance within 5 minutes.

James, AF flashes if a restricted air flow condition exists. Check to make sure the lint screen is clean, the door seal is in place, and the vent is not obstructed. Check the venting from the blower wheel all the way to the outside of the home.

Amanda, The F2 indicates a Keypad/User interface failure. 1. You will want to access the electronic control and visually check that the P11 connector is inserted all the way into the machine motor control. 2. Visually check that the user interface assembly is properly inserted in the console assembly. 3. If both visual checks pass, replace the user interface assembly.
