The Whirlpool High Limit Thermostat is an OEM component for Whirlpool dryers, designed to prevent the dryer from overheating by shutting off the heat when the dryer reaches a certain temperature. This safety mechanism is crucial for preventing fires and maintaining the longevity of your dryer.

Symptoms of a bad High Limit Thermostat include:

  • Clothes taking longer than usual to dry
  • Dryer not producing any heat
  • Overheating of the dryer exterior

These issues may arise due to a malfunctioning thermostat, which can occur from a buildup of lint and debris blocking proper airflow, a faulty heating element that causes the dryer to overheat, or wear and tear over time.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models, ensuring a wide range of applicability and reliability for maintaining your dryer's performance.

George for Model Number Maytag gas dryer, Model DG412

I have a maytag gas dryer, model DG 412, approximately 35 yrs old. It was not igniting and heating up. The drum and everything else seem to be running ok. I changed the coils (k series ignition coil kit) and the Igniter (flat style Igniter). Now the igniter glows and you hear it humming, then it clicks, but does not start heating and the glow goes out. It cycles again and glows, clicks and goes off again with out starting. What do you think the problem is?? Could it be the high limit thermostat?

1 Answer

George, Since the igniter is coming on and glowing and then goes off, the coils have been replaced, this would mean the thermostats are working and the issue will be a gas valve that is faulty. The part number for the valve is W10116794 but unfortunately, has been discontinued by the manufacturer with no suitable replacement.

Greg for Model Number LDG8426GGE

I have a Maytag gas dryer model LDG8426GGE. It has been converted to LP gas. The dryer was running fine, but yesterday was left running for a long while with no gas. When the gas was put on and the dryer was run again, the flame became extremely large, hot and orange, shooting past the cylinder, and soot filled the drum. The dryer was set to automatic but the dial had not moved at all; I stopped the dryer while it was still running and the clothes inside were hot and covered in soot. I checked the burner tube assembly and it was completely charred on the inside. I'm assuming I'll have to replace that? Is there anything else that I might need to replace also? Thermostat, flame sensor, solenoids?

1 Answer

Greg, Based on this information it sounds like the issue will be caused by a faulty gas valve on the unit but will want to check the gas pressure that is coming into the unit is 10 Water column inches of pressure.

Hello Bill. Try replacing the igniter. If it continues, replace the gas valve on the unit.

Hello Todd. Check the coils and see if they test good. You can test the coils using a multi-meter MA-DM1. The two prong coil will read 1,000-1,300 ohms, and the three prong coil will read 1,300-1,400 ohms across prongs 1&2, and 500-600 ohms across prongs 1&3. Test the coils after running the dryer for about 10 minutes. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Ed, It would be the coil assembly 279834 that's at fault. If the flame sensor WP338906 was the issue, the igniter would not glow, or would not cycle off, and the burner would not ignite.

Jay, Your description indicates the tub sensor 304997 and spark gap 306130 are not sensing/feeling the wet clothes. The control board "thinks" the clothes are dry and then the control steps into the five(5) minute cool down cycle and shuts off. The sensor is located in side the drum just below the lint filter grille on the front bulkhead. To replace the spark gap, you will need to remove the two(2) Phillips head screws at the top of the dryer front panel, lean the panel out at the top, so access the 1/4 in. hex head screw that holds the spark gap to the front tumbler support assembly.

Sonny M. for Model Number maytay adg7400aww

i have done my trouble shooting but i continue to have intermittent heating problems. the burner comes on and off for about 30 seconds each time, the igniter gives a bright amber glow. the readings I took appear to be ok from: thermal switch (001), igniter (049) , burner valves (two prong: 1.2, three prong: 556), flame sensor switch (01) and the high limit thermostat (.04 and 7.1) the gas flow is ok (unobstructed) and the vent duct is clear. your assistance is greatly appreciated. thank you.

1 Answer

Sonny, Based on the information, and apparently you have a digital multi meter, your readings are pretty much in range, except the hi limit switch WP303395 it should also have a reading of 000 "closed" circuit at room temperature and an "open"(infinite resistance) circuit when the temperature reaches 220 dgrs.F. When testing the gas valve coils, you need to let the dryer run and heat for a few minutes (10 - 15 minutes) then test the resistances. You quite often get a false reading, when the coils are "cold".

Ruly@membrila.com, The x does not have a significance on which way the wires are attached as this is not a directional thermostat yet it is a bidirectional.

Tbilitski for Model Number DG308

Gas ignites and only stays on for 5 seconds then shuts off. I have done the following: Cleaned the unit components and ductwork completely. Replaced blower wheel, burner assembly, all three coils on the gas valve and ignitor. Tested the Hi temp thermostat and it showed continuity. Then by-passed the thermostat by disconnecting the part and connecting the leads together. The gas ignited but the flame still shut off after 5 seconds. I have run the unit with the front panel on to insure proper air flow. What's next?

1 Answer

Hello, The only thing that can cause the issue is either the neutral is being dropped through the centrifugal switch in the motor, or the gas valve has a mechanical issue.
