This defrost timer controls when your refrigerator or freezer enters and exits the automatic defrost cycle to clear frost from the evaporator coils. Replacing a failed timer restores reliable defrosting to help maintain airflow, cooling performance, and stable temperatures.

  • Advances on a timed schedule to initiate and end the defrost cycle
  • Sends power to the defrost heater during defrost, then returns the system to cooling
  • Helps prevent heavy frost buildup that restricts airflow and cooling
  • Common symptoms of a bad timer: unit not defrosting or warming over time, heavy ice on the evaporator/cover, stuck running or stuck in defrost, or a timer that won't advance
What's included: 1 defrost timer Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Access the timer (commonly in the control housing or machine compartment)
  • Note/photograph wire positions and move leads one at a time to the new timer; mount securely
  • Restore power and monitor for proper cycling; some models allow using the timer's advance slot to start a test defrost

For Whirlpool Defrost Timer (Part Number: OEM18022548)

Steve F. for Model Number AFU206AW

I bought this freezer new and it has iced up the inside since brand new. Water is leeking off of the evaporator and falling down to the sump where the drain tube is. It then freezes up before it can go down the drain tube. Many times I have disassemabled thawed it all out, pour hot water down the drain tube and it is clear of blockage. Put it all back together and within 2 weeks, ice accumulating on the bottom basket again. Water from the evaporator just freezes before it can run down the tube. My dealer told me they all do that and I would just have to take it apart every so often and clean it out. I wanted him to take the junk thing back but he wouldn't. Is this true or is there an update or something I can do to fix this, I have about had it with this thing. Please help. Thank you

Hi Steve. There is a frozen drain repair kit part # 8201771. It is a device that hangs -centered- in the drain hole from the defrost heater mount assy. This will transfer enough defrost heat into the drain and make sure it stays clear and not clog. Thank You.

Tony, You need to check a couple of things first. Check and make sure the door gasket is sealing to the frame all the way around, and especially along the bottom. Remove the evaporator cover (the back wall inside the freezer) and check the drain tube W10862416 for blockage or collapse, and decide the area and assembly with hot water and towels. and also check the drain hose for a proper seat and attachment to the defrost drip pan.

Paul for Model Number MQU2057AEW

This is a Maytag upright freezer. It is tripping the gfci plug. I checked the wiring. No problems found. No power to the compressor when plugged in directly. ( No gfci ). When I reset the Timer, the system works fine. When the timer times out, the system stops. Is the Timer defective? I noticed on the schematic there is a control in series with the compressor power. Is this the same as the timer? Did not see the timer on the schematic. Power into the freezer goes through this timer first before it goes anywhere else.Thanks.

Hello Paul. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the timer WP3-81329 is bad and will need to be replaced. This is the control in line with the compressor on the wiring diagram. Hope this helps.

Needtoknow for Model Number Whirlpool Freezer Model Number EV201NXMQ02

Dear www.appliancepartspros.com I have a Whirlpool Freezer: Model: EV201NXMQ02 L1 Serial: EWR1463296 Refrigerator Defrost Timer Manufacturer Model: 4357124 Age: It is 6 years old. Problem: Intermittently, the food in the freezer defrosts for no apparent reason (No power interruptions, door is tightly closed, freezer temp is set correctly, etc.) For the following reasons, it appears to me that the defrost timer is intermittently malfunctioning: a. The evaporator fan does not always come back on after the defrost cycle should have had plenty of time to complete. The evaporator fan is off even though the compressor is running. 1. Often, if I do not manually advance the defrost timer, the compressor runs continuously, but the evaporator fan never comes on and everything in the freezer eventually defrosts. 2. However, if I wait for 1 to 2 hours after the glow of the defrost heater goes off (to make sure the defrost cycle has plenty of time to complete) and then manually advance the timer, the evaporator fan comes on and everything freezes fine. I am trying to determine several things: a. Am I correct in my thoughts that the defrost timer is bad?? If it is not the defrost timer, what do you think the problem is?? b. On the timer, it says it is a “12 hour timer”…does this mean that it should go through a complete defrost cycle every 12 hours?? c. There is no markings on the timer that indicates how long the defrost cycle should last. How many minutes should the defrost cycle last?? d. If it is the defrost timer that is the problem, is it better to replace it with the same OEM mechanical timer or to replace it with an electronic (no motor) type defrost timer?? If the electronic model is better, but more expensive, I don’t mind paying the extra money for a more reliable timer which provides me with more peace of mind. Thank you very much in advance. You folks provide a great service to home owners and we appreciate it.

Hello! Here are the answers to your questions: A. The way you describe it, it sounds like the defrost timer, but that does not explain why the fan is not coming on. There have been some models made where the defrost thermostat has to be satisfied before the evaporator fan will kick on. B. Typically, its 12 hours of compressor run time. There are some models where it is actual 12 hr run time, with this model this is not the case. C. Typically, somewhere around 20 mins. D. We are not aware of an electronic timer that will replace the current timer that you have. You can purchase the timer WP3-81329 to see if this will correct your issue. If for any reason it does not, you have 365 days to return the part. Here is our return policy information for you to view, thanks! http://www.appliancepartspros.com/customerservice/returns.aspx
