Symptoms of a bad primary water inlet valve include:

  • No water dispensing from the refrigerator

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Primary Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18016398)

1 Answer

Kevin, there is a secondary water valve that is used to divert the water between the ice maker and the water dispenser. The part number for the secondary valve is 12002193.

Scott, It could be either one of the 2 valves that would be causing the icemaker to not get ice. Also check the fill tube to ensure it is not frozen.

Currently I have no ice or water filling the ice maker. However, I do have water at the dispenser. At Appliance Parts Pros advice, here is what I have done so far: 1. Replaced the ice maker D7824708Q 2. Replaced the inlet valve 12544002 3. Replaced the secondary valve 12002193 4. Removed the fill tube and inspected for cracks and freezing 5. Jumped the ice maker with 16 gauge wire i.e. H and T terminals By questions is what's next? When I jumped the ice maker am I suppose to hear something? Should the motor engage? What should I expect? Would something lead be to believe that the ice maker is bad? I am curious as to what you suggest In the next couple of days I am going to test both of the replacement valves with a multimeter. Perhaps one of the solenoids is bad? Interestingly enough, my old valves test between 200 and 500 ohms, which means I did not have to replace either valve. I will await your advice.

Hello Bob. It sounds like your not getting power to the icemaker. Test the wires going to the icemaker and make sure there is 120 volts there. If not, look for bad wiring or bad connections.

Hello- I have a Maytag side by side fridge, with water in the door and an icemaker. I randomly have trouble with the icemaker inlet freezing and then water overflowing into the ice bin and down the side of the freezer. The tube doesn't freeze, the small spout where the tube goes into freezes and then won't take any more water. I replaced the inlet valve about 6 months ago and it has been better, but now has started back again. Do I need to replace the ic maker itself, or the inlet valve again? Thanks

1 Answer

Brady, You're going to need to consider replacing both inlet valves 12002193 and WP12544002. With this particular water system, you need to maintain a minimum of 32 PSI water supply pressure at the primary fill valve connection. Low water pressure or poor water quality can cause the fill valves to "seep" and allow water to accumulate in the tube and freeze. The ice maker fill circuit is seldom the issue, but is a very remote possibility. You also want to check and make sure the freezer temperature is not too cold, the dispenser ice door is sealed after dispensing ice cubes, and the water fill grommet on the back of the refrigerator is seated to the cabinet back wall.

We found a leak coming from our refrigerator and determined that it was coming from the water inlet valve #12544002. We purchased the part from you and installed it. We have now corrected the leak and have water working in the in refrigerator dispenser but the ice-maker is not working. Once we lowered the arm on the ice-maker it dumped ice which must have been in the ice-maker since we turned off the water a few week ago. Subsequently we have not had any ice made and the tray is dry. Any ideas on our next step?

Hello Mike. You need to check and see if the fill tube for the icemaker is frozen and will need to be thawed out on the unit.

Hello William, It is a possibility that the water line to the icemaker froze the fill tube. If frozen then you would have a seeping water valve. This would be the secondary water valve that would be needed. Check to make sure that when you push dispenser that you are getting power to both the valves.
