Burning smell New coil eliminates hot-spot arcing & insulation burn

DIY install — about 20 minutes

  1. Unplug dryer and remove back panel to access heater housing.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Heating Element (Part Number: OEM9282771)

1 Answer

Sandra, If the timer is not working in the timed or auto dry cycle then you will want to replace the timer as it sounds like the contacts in the timer may be bad and may have a bad timer motor. If this issue is only occurring in the Auto cycle then the cycling thermostat may be faulty.

Hello Robert. The heater should read closed for continuity If it does not dry like it use to, It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Rob, You will want to check the heater assembly on the unit to make sure that the heater is not grounding out once it heats up. This would be the most likely cause for the issue.

Marielle, Based on the description of the issue, it sounds like there is an issue with the contacts in the timer of the unit. The contacts appeared to be making at some points but not others therefore creating the no heat issue. This would require a new timer WPW10185970.

Diane, I believe your model should read WGD6400SW1. This is a gas dryer and does not use a heating element. Please contact us at your earliest convenience for further troubleshooting assistance. Thanks.

Scott, With the issue that you are having, this issue would most likely be caused by a faulty thermal fuse. You can test the thermal fuse which is located on the heater housing for continuity and if it does not have continuity then the thermal is ban and you would need to replace part number LA-1053.

Video was perfect, excellent simple instructions. The heating element you showed is just exactly like mine. I found a break in the spiral wire that turns red and heats up after I did my continuity test. So the element is bad and I ordered my new one with you guys. My question is I only have a two (2) wire hook up on my element and yours showed three (3) wires. I looked for another just in case it fell off but there is not one. It works O.K. with the two what would the third be for? They must have made them with two at sometime. The dryer is 10 years old. Thanks guys you were a very big help and saved us a lot of money. GOOD customer service all the way around!!!!!!
