Gas stove burner won't turn off: Common Causes & How to Fix

1Range/Stove/Oven Valve

Most Common Solution
Repair Instructions:

The gas valve in a gas stove serves as the gateway to control the flow of gas to the burners. When you turn the knob to switch off a burner, the gas valve should close, cutting off the supply of gas to that specific burner. However, if the gas valve becomes faulty, it may fail to close completely or remain partially open, allowing gas to continue flowing to the burner even after you've attempted to turn it off.

How to Replace Range/Stove/Oven Valve

  1. Shut off gas supply at the main shut-off valve behind or under the appliance.

  2. Remove knobs from the valve stem by pulling directly away from the appliance.

  3. Disconnect flexible gas connector lines from valve by loosening coupling nuts with a wrench.

  4. Remove valve mounting fasteners such as screws or nuts holding it in place.

  5. Gently remove old valve from orifice manifold by wiggling free.

  6. Apply pipe thread sealant to the connections of the new replacement valve.

  7. Position valve base into manifold cutout and start mounting fasteners by hand.

  8. Reattach flexible gas lines hand tightening fittings before final wrench tightening.

  9. Secure all mounting fasteners on valve base tightly.

  10. Turn gas supply back on and check connections for leaks with soapy water.

2Range/Stove/Oven Surface Burner Valve

Most Common Solution
Repair Instructions:

The burner valve is a fundamental component in a gas stove's burner system, and it plays a pivotal role in regulating the flow of gas to the burners. When you rotate the control knob to turn off a burner, the burner valve should close, effectively stopping the flow of gas to that particular burner. However, if the burner valve becomes faulty, it may not close entirely or can develop leaks, allowing gas to continue to flow to the burner even when you've tried to turn it off.

How to Replace Range/Stove/Oven Surface Burner Valve

  1. Shut off the gas supply at the source closest to the appliance. This helps prevent gas leaks.

  2. Disconnect the flexible gas connector tube from the valve by loosening the coupling nut with a wrench.

  3. Remove the surface burner head/grate to access the valve mounting screws or clips.

  4. Disconnect the wire harness from the valve by depressing locking tabs on the connector.

  5. Remove mounting screws/clips to release the valve from the orifice manifold.

  6. Remove the old valve by gently wiggling free of manifold opening.

  7. Apply thread sealant to the inlet of the new valve before installation.

  8. Mount the new valve assembly using original screws or clips.

  9. Reconnect the gas line and wire harness.

  10. Remount burner parts and test before restoring gas supply.

3Range/Stove/Oven Control Knob

Common Solution
Repair Instructions:

If your stove burner won't switch off, start by checking the control knob for any damage. A knob that's broken might not be able to turn the switch stem properly, which can cause it to keep sending electricity to the burner.

How to Replace Range/Stove/Oven Control Knob

  1. Turn off the appliance and allow heating surfaces to fully cool before servicing.

  2. Gently pull the defective knob straight away from the stem. Knobs may be friction fit or have a retained clip.

  3. Inspect the knob stem for any buildup or debris that could affect installation of the new knob.

  4. Fit the replacement knob's central hub over the valve stem so that indicator markings align properly.

  5. Push firmly until the knob is fully seated and secure on the stem. You may need to flex the knob to pass the retaining tab.

  6. Check that the knob turns freely without binding on the stem or panel.

  7. Repeat knob replacement process for any additional defective knobs.

  8. Turn the appliance back on and verify all knobs and settings operate as intended.

4Range/Stove/Oven Knob

Common Solution
Repair Instructions:

If the burner on your stove won't switch off, first check the control knob for any signs of damage. A knob that's broken might not be able to turn the switch stem properly. This could cause it to keep sending electricity to the burner.

How to Replace Range/Stove/Oven Knob

  1. Shut off power to the range by flipping the circuit breaker or unplugging the appliance for safety.

  2. Gently hold the knob to be replaced and wiggle it from side to side until it lifts off the shaft or stem underneath.
  3. Clean any residue from the mounting stem if the old knob was stuck on tightly. This ensures a good fit for the new knob.
  4. Orient the new replacement knob so its mounting tab lines up with the flat spot on the stem below.
  5. Slide the knob down securely onto the stem pushing until it sits firmly in place without wobbling.
  6. Turn the knob left and right to check smooth rotation without catching on the shaft.
  7. Repeat for any additional knobs needing replacement on that burner or control panel.
  8. Restore power and test knob functions like turning on a burner to ensure proper replacement.
  9. Knob replacement is complete! The stove controls should now operate as normal.
