GE bottom freezer icemaker stopped working for the 2nd time. Refrigerator bought in 2008, replaced (first time) icemaker in 2009 by GE tech for $450, after 7 years 2nd ice maker failed I decided to attempt replacing the icemaker myself. Purchased a replacement icemaker that comes as a kit. I replaced the water valve and the icemaker unit with in 30 minutes and I had ice the next day. Easy peasy for less than $140. Ordered new enclosure. Place ice maker into 'off' position. Remove ice tray assembly by pulling forward. Unscrew left hand side screw under old enclosure. Pulled broken part forward and up slightly. Unhooked wire harness from back of freezer. You can reach from underneath pulled out part. Or from top if you tilt rear of part down. Pull assembly out.

Initially I noticed the crusher drum was cracked and broken so I replaced the drum the retaining nut on the end of the auger and the circlip and washer. it worked fine for a time and then the drum began free wheeling. upon further inspection I discovered the retain nubs on the auger had worn down allowing the blade to slip down the auger body. so I replaced the auger, drum, drive blade, and drive cam. Ordered replacement part and changed it out myself. Was pretty simple except for the fact that I could not get the trim ring around the dispenser unit entirely off the door. I was able to start at the top and pull it out enough to change part, but was afraid to pull too hard on it for full removal thinking it could break. Unscrew part from door, disconnect wire harness to part, remove, re-connect new part and re-install.
