Manufacturer Part Number: W11454734

The Washer Gear Case is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It plays a crucial role in the washer's transmission system, managing the agitation and spin cycles by regulating the drum's movement. This ensures that the washing machine operates effectively, providing thorough cleaning and efficient water extraction.

Common causes of a bad gear case include mechanical wear from extended use, damage from overloading the washer, or internal failures within the gear mechanism. Such issues can disrupt the washer's ability to perform its cycles correctly.

Symptoms of a bad gear case include:

  • The washer failing to agitate or spin
  • Loud grinding or clicking noises during operation
  • The washer leaking oil or grease
  • Incomplete wash or spin cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Answer

Hello Gregory, thanks for reaching out to AppliancePartsPros.com On this washer, the gearcase is set to the spin position by default, so if it is only spinning the agitator either the gearcase W11454734 has failed and needs to be replaced or something is engaging the gearcase to be in agitation all the time. You might try unplugging the washer or turning it off at the breaker and spinning the tub by hand. If the tub and agitator spin together when there is no power to the appliance but move separately of each other when the washer is connected to power, then the control board W11116592 is engaging the shift actuator when it shouldn't and will need to be replaced. If the tub and agitator are always moving independently of each other, you'll need to look at the splutch/clutch assembly W10721967 and the shift actuator W11481722, these are located on the bottom of the gearcase under the washer. Remove those 2 components and see if that frees up the gearcase so that the tub and agitator move together. Even if it doesn't you'll want to look at the teeth and splines on the clutch for wear, that could be the stripping noise you are hearing.
