Manufacturer Part Number: WP338906

The Flame Sensor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas dryers. This component plays a critical safety role by monitoring the presence of the gas burner flame during the drying cycle.

Causes of needing to replace the flame sensor can include normal wear and tear over extended use, exposure to high temperatures or corrosion, or physical damage to the sensor itself.

Symptoms that may indicate a faulty flame sensor include:

  • The dryer not heating or producing heat properly
  • Error codes related to the gas system or ignition failure
  • The dryer shutting off unexpectedly during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore gas dryer models.

Answer

Walter, if the ignitor is cycling on and off but does not ignite, there is likely a valve WP8318277 issue. If the ignitor does not glow at all, the cycling thermostat WP3387134, the thermal fuse WP3392519, the thermal cutoff and the hi-limit thermostat (thermal cutoff and hi-limit come in a kit) W11050897 will need to be tested for continuity (with the unit unplugged from the outlet). If any of these do not test good for continuity, it will need to be replaced. The gas coils 279834 would need to be tested for resistance. The two prong coil should measure 1220O of resistance, the three prong will measure 1365O from terminal 1 to 2, and 560 from 1 to 3. If everything tests good, the unit will need to be put back together and the timer will need to be tested for voltage while running at terminal R for 120VAC. If there is not 120VAC, the timer WP8299766 would need to be replaced (temperature selection on high when testing). If there is 120VAC, then the gas valve would need to be replaced.
