Refrigerator would not defrost lots of ice on rear wall of refrigerator Gary W. • Conover , NC • May 19, 2015
After finding an excellent video on Youtube that addressed the exact problem I had, I ordered: a defrost heater and also replaced the Thermo Bimetal-Protec, and a sensor. The biggest problem was getting the ice that had formed on the back of my refrigerator to melt. Replaces the freezer evaporator defrost heater to melt frost and keep the evaporator fins clear during the defrost cycle, helping restore proper airflow and more consistent cooling when frost or ice builds up. What it does:
- Heats the evaporator fins during the defrost cycle to remove accumulated frost and ice.
- Common symptom: visible frost or ice buildup on evaporator coils or freezer walls.
- Other symptoms: reduced cooling performance or fluctuating/freezer temperatures that may indicate a defrost failure.
- Works as the heating element in the refrigerator's defrost system to prevent recurring frost accumulation.
What's included: One defrost heater. Install notes:
- Always disconnect power to the appliance before servicing to avoid shock or injury.
- Heater mounts near or on the freezer evaporator; access typically requires removing interior panels and the evaporator cover.
- Inspect wiring and connectors for damage; test the old heater for continuity before replacement.

I defrosted the freezer coils in the overhead compartment and, unfortunately, had to dispose of the spoiled food in the lower, "fresh food" section. I used a flat-head screwdriver to advance the timer to the defrost cycle but was not having any luck with the heater element. I removed the defrost heater bar from the lower section of the coils and used my meter, set on ohms, to test it for continuity. I got no "tone" from my meter which spelled bad news for the heater. I went online to find a...
