I surfed several appliance forums for the most likely problems with my washer and possible fixes. I was able to reach a consensus fairly quickly on the two most likely issues. The most likely would require a part replacement and the second most likely would require a cleaning of a "pressure" tube. I found several youtube videos on how to remove the panels on my washer, to check/replace the part that was the most likely culprit and to clean the tube that was the second most likely culprit. From the videos, these tasks looked to be fairly straight forward. I found the part easily on AppliancePartsPros.com using my washer model number and the great schematics that they have online. The part was about half the price of a basic service call in my area. I decided to give it a try and ordered the part online with my credit card. It arrived in 1 day. I took my iPad into the laundry room and sort of watched the youtube video interactively as I open up the washer, cleaned the tube and completed the part replacement. My wife ran a test wash and the problem was fixed. It took me about an hour and half to do everything including moving the washer, disconnecting electric and hoses, replacing the part and cleaning up.
I figure I saved a little over $100. For me the biggest thing is that I didn't have to go through the hassle of scheduling a service call and taking off work to meet the service tech.
...and my wife thinks I'm awesome! Almost nothing disrupts marital harmony like a broke clothes washer...unless it's a broke water heater. :-)
