I remember from when I was a kid that my father replaced the ice tray because it would lose its slipperiness from the teflon coating wearing away over time and faster with hard water. I did not initially have a softener when I got this refrigerator but put one in about 4 years ago. I researched this same problem with my ice maker and sure enough, the symptoms I was seeing with my ice maker were the same. I replaced the ice tray portion (about a $3.49 part) after washing the new tray out with soapy water and sure enough, we have whole cubes again. The problem occurs when the coating is almost gone at which point the bond between the cubes and the tray becomes much stronger and the twisting action of the tray breaks the cubes into small pieces before they even hit the storage container.
