How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6014843 / WPW10074580 Inner Cap

Apparently the problem was created by age all of the cams had turned yellow and the inner cap And cam had become brittle. Upon removal the cap Shattered. The cam itself had fused itself to the inside of the agitator and was very difficult to remove I finally had to break it out by inserting a flat bladed screwdriver through the small square hole in the side and then lifted on the bottom of the cam to break it out as well this took some time. after the cam and dogs Were extricated I cleaned up the agitator and it only took about 5 to 10 minutes to reinstall the parts listed , the inner cap with rubber gasket, and the short cam agitator repair kit parts. Had the parts not deteriorated to the point of breakage this job would have only taken about 20 minutes. The only concern that I have now is that there was no mention as to how tight to make the bolt that holds the agitator on the shaft. Should return freely or be fairly tight I believe freely is the answer but I'm going to research it. 

Took the fabric softener cup out then removed the cap from the inside of the agitator! I used a 13MM socket and long extension to remove the nut. Lifted agitator out and tossed it :-) dropped the new agitator in and lined up the assembly and transmission until it dropped then put 13MM back on and tightened it then the cap goes on and lastly the fabric softener cup and now give yourself a pat on the back because you did it! 

Short Cam Agitator repair kit and a new Inner Cap to protect same. This part fit without the inner cup type holder for the cam which they showed in the video. I guess that is why the term "short cam" is used on my part? My 2004 Whirlpool also has a magnetic lid washer start rather than the mechanical slot & pin start. Thanks for being there for me AppliancePartsPros.. 

I removed the fabric softener cup, pulled up the old cap and o-ring, and put in the new one. It is a critical piece because otherwise water will get into the agitator mechanism which would be a very expensive repair. Took two minutes to replace. 

Ordered a repair kit from Appliance parts Pros, others did not have in stock and would have had to replace entire agitator assembly. 20 minutes to fox with correct factory parts. 

Ordered the parts from the diagram on the website. Watched the very informative video showing how to disassemble and re-assemble the agitator. Everything went very well and as described. 

Replaced dog on agitator. 

Removed the agitator, then layer machine on its side and removed motor with shaft. Replace warn clutch assembly, installed motor back on to machine. Next stood machine up and installed new agitator parts . Assembled agitator hooked up water lines and discharge, plugged in and washed about 10 loads of clothes. Repair time was about 1 hour. Most important the service women that assisted me was very good and polite with me,I'm sorry I couldn't remember her name. 

I was able to see the likely problem through a YouTube video and through the AppliancePartsPro Chatline (Brittany was awesome) we walked through the dismantling and analyzed the pieces good/bad and bought what was needed to repair. For less than the cost of a service call, and faster, I had the parts (I paid rush service for delivery because it was relevant), but bottom line was <$100 and in under 48 hours, I was able to have it in perfect working order with minimal effort (and money). 

Replaced the main drain pump.
