How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6014843 / WPW10074580 Inner Cap

Replaced the clutch. 

I was annoyed with the issues with my agitator, the top half of the agitator stopped turning, clothes would only slosh around and weren't able to be pushed down in the tub. The washer is 10-15 years old so figured I would just buy a new one, but did 10 minutes of research on appliancepartspros.com, ordered a $5 set of agitator dogs, did a 10 minute repair job that even the least technically inclined person could do, and I'm back in business washing like a champ! So glad I took a few minutes to research the problem and this website easily and quickly gave me the right solution. Effortless! Now I just need to tackle issues with my dryer running too hot, but already have troubleshooting ideas from this site to hopefully get a few more years out of my dryer too, just have to get motivated to pull it out from the wall and dig into it! 

I replaced the drive block because it worked its way off the basket drive shaft which was allowing the tabs on the basket drive shaft to skip across the drive block which also caused the basket to come loose and wobble and take longer to stop 

Watched your excellent videos then took my agitator apart. Of all the parts, it was only the dogs that were malfunctioning because they were worn down. Ordered new dogs and a new cap (because some fabric softener detritus had leaked into the cam area), replaced them, and everything is working fine again. 

I decided to take the agitator apart before I ordered new parts. BTW, this is a 15-year-old washer. As I pulled the inner cap off I found that it did not seal correctly and my bolt was a rusty mess. My 7/16 socket would not even grip it well. But I took some paper towels and used it as a liner inside my socket and I was able to grip the bolt enough to that I could turn it out. Once it was off, everything came out easy. And for sure it was the agitator dogs that were worn badly. In fact, I am glad that ordered a new kit because the old portion with the agitator dogs just fell apart when I pulled the middle off the top. Putting the new kit in was a breeze. I put the agitator dogs into the clear portion of the kit and the yellow part then clicked into place when I put it on so that it was like one assembly with no parts falling off as the old parts did. Lining up that new kit to the middle section of the agitator so that it grabbed the bottom section took a little bit of finesse but when it lined up it clicked in as well. I used 0-ring lube on the inner cap when I installed it and that too took a few tries to seat properly. But all in all, the project was easy and quick. We cleaned it out with Affresh and its back to running normally. 

Replaced agitator dogs along with the inner agitator cap sealing the fabric softener chamber from the agitator section. Second repair that has been necessary for the 19 yrs service life this washer has seen. The first repair was performed in April, 2011, so I got 11 yrs of life from original agitator dogs, and 8 yrs from the first replacement set. I imagine that this will be the last set I will need before I replace the washer/dryer set with new models. 

Just like the video said, except our agitator bolt was rusted and stripped. I used 3 applications of regular WD 40; let each one sit several hours; then used the Irwin Bolt Extractor set and it worked like a charm. We needed the 10" 3/8 socket extension just like the video said as well. I ordered a new inner cap and seal. My old one was just looking a bit beat up. The seal ended up being too thick and I couldn't get it to seat properly but my old one was in ok shape so just put the old inner cap seal on the new inner cap. AppliancePartsPros.com rocks!!!

The washer works like new now.
