How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985146 / W10820036 Door Switch

Replace switch last after cabinet was removed, thanks to the videos the task was a lot easier to do. Replace the 4 springs, bought the brackets just in case, but did not need. The washer still shakes on spin cycle without a load, but not as bad. I think someone in the pass overloaded the washer. I probably should have purchase those nylon bushings, which requires to remove the tub, I watch the video. Plus I spent more time cleaning the upper ring and plastic tub. 

First I had to diagnose the problem of course. I think I found a video on Appliance Parts Pros that had a video of the possible causes of why your dryer would fail to start. When I checked the door switch and it broke off as soon as I touched it, bingo! So I went to Appliance Parts Pros website, punched in the model # of my dryer and all the parts for my dryer popped up. I found the door switch part, ordered it paying the extra $10 for the expedited shipping, and the part came the next day!! I watched another video on Appliance Parts Pros website of how to take out and install the door switch. The video was very helpful and accurate, and installing the new switch was pretty easy. My only criticism is that the video did not show the tech installing the new switch, probably because that was the hardest part of the whole process. Overall, the Appliance Parts Pros website was incredibly helpful. The part was delivered the next day. I am now a huge fan!!! 

Replaced the lid switch. 

We had a little struggle because we bought an old Kemore dryer at an Estate sale and the dryer wouldn't stay on. We looked on line and we discovered it was the door switch. Since the part was so close to the drum our hands and arms had a hard time getting in between. What we did was put one screw in the top to hold it in place and then we could fit the other screw underneath where it was suppose to go inside the lip of the door. Then we took the screw away that was holding it in place and put it in correctly side by side the other one. Plugged in the dryer and it started and works like a charm. This would be an easier fix if you had a newer style dryer. 

Open the top lid of the machine by removing the 2 screws from the lint trap. Open the dryer door and removed the 2 screws holding the door switch in place. Removed the 2 wires attached to the switch. Replaced the broken switch with the new one. Replaced the 2 mounting screws holding the switch in place. Closed the lid and replaced the screws in the lint trap. Plug the dryer in and started the dryer. 

Replaced door switch. Only took 2 minutes to remove. 30 minutes to get screws to line up. switch is in odd place to get to. 

I ordered the part and it took 4 hour to remove certain parts in order to reconnect, splice wires and screw the lid switch under the front cover of the washing machine. After all was said and done, it works like new. 

After watching some internet videos, I concluded my lid switch had gone bad while the washer was in storage for 8 years. I ordered the wrong part: after it arrived I realized my switch was even simpler, a normally open microswitch. I bypassed the lid switch to confirm the motor and pump still worked, then ordered the right part. AppliancePartsPros quickly delivered the correct switch; it only took about 10 minutes to install. It takes a village to replace a part: an engineer, computer programmer, accountant, analyst were able to successfully replace the broken door switch. Thank-you for the video about opening the top of the dryer. The part arrived quickly.
