How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985146 / W10820036 Door Switch

I Googled Kenmore Dryer 90 series will not start. I found some videos on possible causes. It was a small, broken metal piece that switches on when you close the dryer door. I have used ApplianceParts Pros.com before, so I looked up the part number, orderedit, and installit using their video. So happy I could do it myself and save a ton of money. 

Replaced the timer. My timer did not have the blue jumper going from BU to W. I pulled it and put my (BU) Blue and (W) White wires on the posts. It worked. The dryer was also turning off at various times for no reason, so I replaced the door switch as well. Looking back, it was probably just the timer going out. My wife REFUSES to get a new dryer. She loves it, and with you folks around, it's easy to get parts for it and repair it myself. Replaced the belt, the rollers, the fuzzy gasket and some other parts last year. Original owners since 1991. Momma is happy!!! 

When the dryer stopped working, I watched a you tube video of the problem on my particular brand and model. It seemed pretty straight forward to fix so I proceeded to search for a new replacement switch. Replaced the water valve. It's very easy unless your hardware is badly corroded and breaks. This is the third one that I have put in this machine so I bought two to have one in stock. Now that I have one at hand, the one in the machine won't break! 

After 43 years of use, my Whirlpool dryer stopped in mid-cycle. Figured to start with what was touched last, the switch. Did a little research online, and tested the switch, it was fine. What seemed to go out after time was the dryer door switch, so that was checked next. The depress button was very low to the surface, got it popped out and tested it manually by holding it in when the start button was pushed. Yep, the dryer started, but the component began to get quite hot, so we unplugged it all again. Reviewed the repair video here at AppliancePartsPros with my exact dryer, got the part number on the video, double-checked it against my model, and ordered the part. Amazingly, the part was sent to me and arrived the very next day after my order! I popped in the new unit, ran through a couple loads in the washer and then the dryer, and it worked as always. Removed a few screws and opened the top of the dryer to get to switch.

APPs stellar videos got me started with confidence. Your parts diagram exactly match mine for my 28 year old Sears Kenmore Gas Model 110-97588210 (75882). Teacher at TMM Appliance convinced me to approach from the simpler, cheaper, easier to access parts inwards using the wiring diagram. I’ve designed products for Klein, Halo, and JUNO but am just an advanced electrical amateur. 3 parts totaling $110 and two hours and it runs and heats to spec. Even had time to vacuum out all over the lower third. Funny, the major problem was the lowly door switch. Fried.
