How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4929086 / W10364988 Water Inlet Valve Assembly

My Maytag Bravo model MVWB300WQ1 washer had started getting error code LF (Long Fill?) part way through the wash cycle. After researching possible causes on-line, I ordered a replacement water inlet valve assembly (W10364988) from APP. The part arrived in about 5 days. I watched their installation video which walked me through every step. I was very impressed. Problem has been solved. 

I watched the video, and then I ordered the part. The part went right in place. The whole process took about thirty minutes. The washer worked.like it was new. 

Easy install of new valve on this unit. Hardest part was releasing the 4 water lines that went to the underside of the valve, but that wasn't really hard. The part that was sent to me was easy to put on and came complete making the replacement quick. Never having done this on this model of washer was more a mental challenge than a repair challenge. 

I replaced the water inlet valve. I watched the video on APP website many times and took notes. I disconnected the power and water to the washer. I disconnected the wires from the old valve and marked the new valve connector with letters: W=white; P=purple, etc.. I used duck tape to secure the top door to the top of the washer. I pushed a putty knife into the clips that held the top to the body. Lift the top and secured it with duck tape. I marked the four hoses with numbers 1 to 4. I used plier to loosen the clamps. Pulled the hoses out of the old valve. Removed two screws from the old valve, Lift the old valve out. Put the new valve in, secured with two screws. Connected all the wires corresponds with color letters. Connected all four hoses to the new valve, and secured with clamps. I fixed the leak. I also replaced the old rubber hot and cold water hoses with stainless steel hoses. 

Replaced the water valve which solved the problem 

Disconnect power and water, remove control panel with two Phillips screws. Remove rear cover. Disconnect four water hoses from under water valve using pliers. Three screws removes the water value unit. Re-assemble value screws and water hoses. Connect new wiring harness following color code of old water valve assembly. Replace rear cover and control panel top. My washer worked like new with this part. Total time including clean-up under washer, less tan one hour. 

Release washer lid with putty knife in two locations on front. Lift lid and remove hose connections to valve. Lower lid and remove control panel, being careful not to damage wire leading to circuit board. Remove all electrical connections to valve and remove two screws holding valve to washer top. Replace in exact order in reverse. 

Followed video and replaced valve unit. Top cover removal was totally different than video, had to unbolt hinges and slide top forward to remove. 

I was lazy - and didn't take the time line-up the threads properly before wrenching the supply hose down on the intake valve... and ended up cross-threading the plastic intake valve. My wife was not happy -and was staring at a pile of laundry. After a few minutes on AppliancePartsPros website.. I was a bit angry that I had to purchase an entire 'water inlet valve assembly'... when all I needed was a new intake valve. This thing came with new wire harness and everything. Boy am I glad I replaced this entire unit - and here is why. After running our unit for almost ten years with hard water supply - all of the solenoid valves were caked with deposits and made a SQUEAL when water ran through the valves. High pitched squeal. We just lived with it.. but now we have a brand new.. AND QUIET.. machine. Thanks for the awesome install videos, too. This only took about 30mins to install.. and I was being super slow and careful. 

Ordered part too close to Christmas so did not receive next day. The wires are not connected to the solenoids so make sure you keep old valve assembly and compare. Fairly easy to connect since new part wires match old wires. First step of course is unplug the washer from power, turn off water valves and disconnect hoses. Have a towel to soak up any water in hoses. Front of machine needs to be forced up and tilted back. Pull all hoses off old valve. Tilt top back down. There are 3 screws in the back of the washer that release the control panel. There are 2 screws that hold the valve assembly in place and 1 screw to secure the ground wire. Keep these as the new valve does not have replacement screws. Install new valve assembly and screw in place and ground wire. Push hoses back onto new valve. Secure top of washer. Screw water lines on, make sure hot to hot cold to cold. Turn water on and plug back in for power. That's it, works better than new.
