How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3953640 / 280187 Washer Drain Pump Assembly

I checked the drain pump for clogs, but it appeared fine. The pump was also running fine with no load on it. However it would not pump water and was making a clicking noise when in service. The motor was going bad, probably slipping poles. Pretty straightforward repair to replace the pump assembly. I would have preferred to replace only the pump, but it is only sold as an entire drain assembly. 

Ordered my parts on Monday afternoon and had my replacement parts on Wednesday afternoon…simple installation assisted by the youtube video. 

The drain assembly portion of the pump was damaged in the mail. I was able to replaced the washer drain pump assembly and use my old drain assembly instead. Worked great. Called Appliance Parts Pros about the damaged piece and they responded real positive. Another part is in the mail. Thanks. 

First I thought it was bearings on drum so changed them didn't really help kept using was getting worse at times so read some more forums and changed drain discharge pump seems to be a lot quititer now as we only run a couple loads tis was a easy fix compared to the drum bearings. 

I ordered the replacement part from Appliance Parts Pros, and was pleased with the speed of the shipping, even to Alaska. My 15 year old son and I watched the replacement video, which was extremely helpful, and then successfully completed the repair and to my delight, the washer started working again. We had to make one modification to the tab on the electrical connector (as described in the paperwork that came with the part) in order for the pump to get power. Super happy with our home repair and appreciative of the on line guidance. 

Installed new pump and hoses 

Order the part of ApplianceParts Pros.com, arrived in one day and followed the basic instructions for replacing the part after watching a YouTube video. 

I looked up the F21 code and it said it was the drain pump. I order 2 different drain pumps from Amazon that were supposed to be for my washing machine, which I sent both back because they didn't fit. So, I order from the AppliancePartsPros.com. I put in my was machine model and part number and they had the drain pump; I double check with the rep ti make sure. I received it in 2 days and installed, and it works like it like new. 

Removed twist off cover from pump. With inspection mirror could see pump impeller sitting inside housing. Further disassembly found impeller shaft had broken. Pump showed up in three days. Installed and performed reset and has been working great. 

Replaced drain pump
