How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3953640 / 280187 Washer Drain Pump Assembly

After looking up on the internet what the F21 error was, a possible obstruction in one of the hose lines. We took every hose off the washer and cleaned them all out. We did find that when we removed the drain pump cover, it was full of various items from years of washing clothes. After a very through cleaning, we put everything back together and tested the washer. Again, an F21 error. After more research, the next item would be the drain pump itself. I bought a new drain pump, installed it, and we are back to washing clothes!! 

I found a repair video that told me to check drain hose and filter, which were good. It told me that if that didn't work to replace the drain pump. No problem getting the pump off but I was having trouble finding a replacement (brick & mortar or online) that looked like it was the correct one. Your website made that process very easy. Input model # and the part showed up, looking exactly like the old part. I ordered it with 1-day shipping and it was at my door in less than 24 hr. I am a very happy customer! 

Brought a pump and swapped it. 

I replaced the drain pump assembly and that seemed to fix the problem. The only problem that I ran into was trying to attach the hose springs back onto the pump connections. Even with the use of pliers it took me several times to put the spring clips onto the drain pump outlets. I think next time I will be using an adjustable clip that I can tighten with a screwdriver instead of the spring clips. 

I waited months before doing this and was ready to buy a new Duet, but thought I'd try a self repair before forking out $600 on Black Friday. FIrst I watched the pump repair video, then ordered the replacement pump with the help of Repair Clinic's easy parts reference guide. The part came less than 48 hrs later. Had my son jack up the washer with two 2x4s, remove the 3 screws on bottom front panel with the proper screw driver. It is not a standard flathead or Philips, but I think a star. We had one on hand. When you remove the bottom front panel, the pump is right there with easy access. I disconnected the connector on the right side of the pump under the housing hood...again, very easy and video demos this. Son depressed the clamps on both pump hoses with a pair of adjustable pliers, removed the hoses, and the rest was a piece of cake to install the new pump. It took us a total of 30-40 mins and my 10 yr old washer works like new for only $140. I couldve easily had done the repair myself but had injured my knee a few days prior. Remember to unplug your washer beforehand and have some old towels on hand when you remove the hoses. Very easy! Very affordable! Very satisfied!

Followed video and was very simple. 

Looked up error code on console. Searched error code on Bing's search engine. Saw that it was something to do with the drain pump. Found and bought the new part at AppliancePartsPros.com. The new drain pump and housing seemed a little expensive but other repair websites were even more money. Watched video on their website on how to replace it. This was very helpful especially in where to find it in the washer. Fairly simple to get to on this model. However the hoses were a pain to get off and back on. Now the washer works great again. No need to buy a new washer yet. 

Easy-peasy fix! Just turned off the water supply, power supply, removed hose clamps and rubber anchors. Replaced the new unit back in that order and ta-dah! Only issue was water in the machine - I bailed as much as I could, tilted the machine back on its corners and put a shallow bin under the pump when I removed the broken one. Thank you!!! 

Whirlpool GHW9100LW front load washer confirmed to be same as GHW9100LW-0. The provided instructions are correct and simple for easy replacement. Before you begin the repair unplug the washer and use a shopvac to to empty water in the tub. Next in front of the white plastic pump housing partly unscrew the center section and use the shopvac to catch the water until empty. Failing to do this would have flooded the floor as the tub had not drained and the pump was full also. Now you can follow the instruction sheet that is supplied.
