How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3953640 / 280187 Washer Drain Pump Assembly

Ordered a new drain pump. Installed it per your instruction video. Simple and cost-effective 

I replaced the drain pump assembly. I had replaced just the pump (not the entire assembly) twice before. Apparently, I bought two knock-off brands at $25 to $40 each and neither lasted very long. The assembly was more expensive but it was an OEM and it is working great. The AppliancePartsPros technician was extremely helpful and very quick in responding back and forth via email. 

Checked and cleaned hoses. Replaced the Drain Pump. 

Purchased the replacement Drain Pump from ApplicancePartsPros.com. Watch the repair video provided on their website. The repair was much easier than I expected. 

Replaced the Drain Pump Assembly. 

The breaker was thrown, so a momentary lock up in the pump when it flew apart? I removed the old pump after the replacement arrived and nickel fell out of it. This was my first look inside this pump, and I was impressed with how well it is designed to protect itself. Now I know that if noise happens again, inspect the trap first. I don't understand how a coin got out of the tub, but we decided to install the new pump in hand as the machine is 21 years old otherwise, seems fine. It was a pricy lesson in washing machine repair but still cheaper than the labor cost for a repairman to walk through the door in our area. 

At first, the tub would not spin and it sounded like the belt was slipping. Found the best belt price on AppliancePartsPros.com and it arrived the NEXT DAY! Then the tub immediately quit draining, so I went directly to A.P.P. and ordered a new pump. The replacement was easy to understand because of the wonderful video on their website. It was a challenge to re-connect the hoses - the spring clamps were hard to get to and hold. I used the same technique as when I replaced the belt. ZIP TIES! I took off the clamp, opened it fully with a pipe wrench, and used a zip tie to hold the clamp open. Then I put the clamp back on the hose and attached it to the new pump and carefully cut the tie. The best part of the experience was the “how to” video which gave me the confidence to tackle this job. For $200 I feel like I have a brand-new washing machine. 

Guidance suggestions on AppliancePartsPros.com were spot on. The first check of clogged hoses and drain pump filter showed no clogs. Digging deeper, removing, and opening the drain pump exposed a broken pump shaft implicating the need to replace the pump assembly. Ordered the OEM replacement pump assembly from AppliancePartsPros.com. The installation of the new pump went without issue. Plenty of room to access the pump through the front lower panel. Required reseating and adjusting the hose clamp on the output hose several times to resolve a slow drip after installation. Now 5+ cycles later and no issues. Thanks AppliancePartsPros... my go-to and first stop for all parts for all my appliances. 

Replaced the Washer Drain Pump. Very straightforward but difficult to access. 

Watched the cycle to see exactly where it was failing and noticed when it was time to drain the tub an abnormal noise was being emitted from the bottom of the washer. I looked at the schematics and saw that the drain pump was at the bottom so I figured it was the pump. Watched the video on how to replace and it was easy as can be. Just a torx 20 driver was needed.
