1. After hearing a loud noise on the freezer side of unit about halfway up, I started investigating what it could be? My conclusion was evaporator motor or evaporator fan blade. One of the signs of this issue was a distinct change in sound when I opened the freezer door. I ordered a new motor and blade, not knowing exactly what it was. 2. I originally ordered the Fan motor from a appliance dealer. I waited for 5 days for it to arrive. In the meantime I scavenge a motor from a junk refrigerator from the dump. Got the six year old refrigerator from my daughter because of it freezing up but was in good ( Stainless Steel) shape to replace our 21 year old Kitchen Aid. The thermistor had been replaced as a cheap first step but didn't correct the problem as it totally froze over within five days. Initially I noticed the crusher drum was cracked and broken so I replaced the drum the retaining nut on the end of the auger and the circlip and washer. it worked fine for a time and then the drum began free wheeling. upon further inspection I discovered the retain nubs on the auger had worn down allowing the blade to slip down the auger body. so I replaced the auger, drum, drive blade, and drive cam.
