The Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This part moves clothes through the water and detergent during the wash cycle. This part ensures thorough cleaning by creating the necessary motion to distribute and cleanse laundry evenly.

Causes of a bad Agitator Assembly can range from wear and tear over extended use, to damage from overloading the washing machine, or even issues with the drive mechanism that powers the agitator's motion.

Symptoms of a bad Agitator Assembly include:

  • Clothes coming out of the wash still dirty or not as clean as expected
  • The washing machine making unusual noises during the wash cycle
  • The agitator not moving during the cycle or moving erratically

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

Danny, While we do not have the exact differences between these parts, the biggest thing I see is the WH43X10034 appears to accept a fabric softener cup as to where the WH43X10033 does not. The fins should not break off the agitator and the only way that this would most likely occur is maybe if the unit is being overloaded.

I asked how to install the new agitator and new coupling- they are attached and it was suggested I watch a video - I did, the video made sense, but the bolt kept falling out when I turned the agitator kit over to put it in place - I am using a 3/8 inch opening (10 inch length) extender - Is this incorrect? Am I supposed to have a 7/16 inch extender? I called to chat yesterday and the lady told me to take a hangar and pull off the coupler from the new agitator - I don't believe that is a smart move - so I am awaiting a better answer. Thanks in advance.

Helen, The coupler that the agitator sits on will not get screwed in from the top of the agitator. The coupler will go on first and bolt down then you would push down on the agitator over the coupler to lock it in place.

I just purchased a new agitator and a new coupling for my machine; however, when the parts came the coupling was attached at the bottom of the agitator and If I try slipping it over the semi long screw that is in the base of the machine I will not be able to turn the new screw because it is too far down and my hand and tool will not fit. If I use the coupler kit, I have a different problem, I cannot dislodge the coupler that is already attached to the agitator. What do I do?

1 Answer

Helen, the agitator is designed so that the bolt goes through both the agitator and coupling. A socket extension is going to be the easiest way to install this part. A video can be found at the following link https://www.appliancepartspros.com/ge-agitator-assembly-wh43x10033-ap3995147.html and is just under the main image. This video can be utilized as a reference to assist with this repair.

don, It is normal to have a small amount of play in it. Not quarter turns or half turns but a little play is normal. If there is more play then you would need to check the splines on the agitator for damage.

Frank, Unfortunately there would be no other agitator that would work for this unit and it sounds like the unit is being overloaded which would cause this issue.

Bob, It would not be normal for the screw to strip out unless it is being overtightened. It is possible that unit is being overloaded causing the screw to strip out. If the screw just backs out then try and add Loctite to the threading.

Hello Jill. Check the splines and the transmission to see what may be the cause of the noise. It could be either causing it.

Hello Jackie. At the bottom of the top section of the agitator is a hole, You have to line it up and insert a screwdriver into the hole and twist the top of the agitator off the bottom section of the agitator. The hole for the screwdriver to go into is on the bottom of the top section of agitator. Thank you.
