The Service Machine Control is an OEM component specifically designed for GE dishwashers. As the main control board, it regulates all wash cycles including temperature, filtration, spray arm rotation, drying functions and end of cycle signals.

Causes of a faulty service machine control include normal wear and tear over time. Electronic failures or water exposure from plumbing issues can also trigger malfunctions.

Symptoms of a failing control board are:

  • Inability to progress through cycles fully
  • Flashing error codes during washes
  • Inconsistent wash and rinse performance
  • Component damage from power overload issues

Replacing it with this genuine GE OEM part restores optimal cycle handling. Proper controls are essential for sanitizing every wash. The part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA and some Kenmore models.

For the past several months it would randomly beep throughout the day but would always finish a cycle once started. About two weeks it went completely dead. Before checking the machine board, I ordered a new one, WD21X24901C. That did not fix the problem. Both the new machine board and old one show a green LED. I checked the J722 connector on the new machine board from pin 2 to pin 5 and see 13.5 volts. Is there anything else I can check? Not sure how to proceed next. Thanks.

1 Answer

Hello ZandK, thank you for contacting Appliance Parts Pros. This style was known to have an issue with the wiring harness WD21X21664/[OEM24136862] that runs between the user interface and the main control board, it is recommended to replace that harness.

Zpwr, if there is not a damaged wire running from the machine control WD21X24901C / OEM28863094 to the user interface WD21X31902C / OEM28874706 and there is not an illuminated LED on the machine control, the machine control would be the cause of failure. The machine control WD21X24901C is the most up-to-date version of the control WD21X24901.

My dishwasher will start to fill with water, but after filling it doesn't do anything else. The timer will count down, the heater activates, but no water circulates. At the end of the cycle is will drain the remaining water from the bottom of the machine. I initially thought this was the float switch and/or water inlet valve. I replaced both of those and the symptoms persist. Do you think the problem is more likely with the circulation pump, or could it be the machine control board?

1 Answer

Hello Brandon, thank you for contacting APP, This will be an issue with the Circulation Pump Motor [OEM18118277] or the Service Machine Control [OEM21647324]. You may be able to verify which if you are comfortable testing live voltage with a meter. When the circulation pump should be running you should be getting about 120V AC at the pump connector from yellow to brown. If voltage is present replace the circulation pump, if not present replace the control.

My door control panel is intermittently dead - no lights or power. If I cycle supply power circuit breaker it does nothing. If I unplug the door wiring line from the main board and plug back in the door panel usually powers up and machine runs normally except that door control panel will randomly chirp and power up on its own sometimes even when one is even in the room. Door wire plug is solid and secure. If I wiggle/move the wiring harness and plug without unplugging it nothing happens so I don't think there is a short in the wiring harness/plug. Lasts for a few days/cycles then goes dead again. Have done this several times and keeps reoccurring. Researching forums and videos it seems that control panel is likely culprit. What say you?

Douglas R, Based on the information provided it does sound like a board issue unfortunately there is no real test between the UI and the main controls. You will likely need to replace one of them and if the issue persists then replace the other board.

Hello, My dishwasher Model # GDT655SSJ2SS worked intermittently after a Power surge/Outage during a storm. I could cycle the breaker and it would work again. Then the UI on top of the door became unresponsive. It has 120vac at the receptacle. After reading the Q & A here it seemed I needed to replace the Main Control Board. I ordered and replaced the Main Control Board with no success. How do I check the wiring harness and/or UI Board? What else could it be?

1 Answer

Dan, You would want to check for 13 VDC getting to the UI board at the connector J401 pin 1 to pin 2. If there is 13 vdc then this will be a faulty UI board. If there is not then go to the main board J722 and test pin 2 to pin 5 and if there is voltage then the harness will be faulty, no voltage would be a faulty main board.

Rick, Based on the information provided the 7 blinks indicate: an issue with the CSM tripping...(Current Sense Module). If the CSM has tripped it is not likely that it is the board. The board should only be replaced after all other possibilities have been ruled out. Potential causes of current leakage to ground are; water leaking onto a live component, a component malfunction (shortage), or a fault with the wiring harness.

Dennis, Test at the drain pump for 120 vac getting to it and if there is but not draining and there are no clogs then replace the drain pump. If there is no power replace the control board.

Dishwasher is completely unresponsive, and will not go into any diagnostics. I have proper voltage, I already had a new door switch, so I tried it, and to no surprise it did not fix the issue. The LED on the main board was flashing rapidly (4x per second) and according to the service manual it says software error replace MC. So I ordered a new main control and installed it, and now the LED is a solid green light, which again according to the service manual means UI personality not set communication error UI and MC. One thing I noticed different between the new and old board is that the old has six removable jumper pins at J231 and the new one does not, and the holes are closed, so I can't transfer the pins from the old to the new? Not sure if that is the problem or if it just also needs a new UI as well?

1 Answer

Jason, This will be an issue with the User Interface or wiring to the interface would cause this issue.

Hello Nick, 817 does not show as a fault code for this model, however, the main control board a the bottom of the dishwasher has an LED light that will blink a number of times depending on what the board sees as a problem or fault.
