The Drain Pump and Motor is an original LG (OEM) replacement part for LG made washing machines that is responsible for removing water from the washer at the end of the wash cycle. The pump forces water out through the drain hose so that clothing comes out free of excess water, making the drying process faster.

Symptoms of a failing Drain Pump Motor include:

  • Water not draining out of the washing machine
  • Noisy or unusual sounds coming from the pump area during the drain cycle
  • The washing machine stopping mid-cycle

Causes of a bad Drain Pump Motor can range from obstructions in the pump or hose, which can strain or damage the motor, to wear and tear from regular use leading to motor failure. Electrical issues can also affect the motor's performance, preventing it from operating correctly.

This OEM LG part can also be used on Kenmore/Sears appliances.

For Lg Genuine Lg Washer Drain Pump And Motor Assembly (Part Number: OEM15985173)

Rod, if the spin basket rotates freely and spins out the clothes properly, the next step would be identifying if the drain hose is placed in the standpipe properly. If it is placed with a seal in the standpipe, a clog in the standpipe can potentially cause water to back up and not allow the washer to drain properly. Another thing to check for would be water that comes into the tub when it should not. If water does slowly dispense into the tub when it should not, it can cause this failure and would be a result of a valve failure.

Our 110 LG w/d combo pump quit. We watched the video and removed the assembly as shown. We removed the impeller and found a very small piece of plastic inside. We reattached the impeller with JP Weld and reinstalled in the machine. We ran a test and it ran all cycles correctly including pumping out the water. We ran a second test just to be sure and the pump quit as before with the OE warning. We removed the assembly again and took the top of the pump off and found it totally clogged with lint and grit. We cleaned it out and reassembled once more and ran a test and all cycles ran correctly. We then started a load of towels only to have the pump quit again. Is there some hose or a place somewhere in the machine that could cause the lint to build up and cause this problem? We have had this machine for 2 years without any problems at all. Thank you, Betty Holl

Michael, You will want to put the pump back in the unit and test to see if there is 120 Vac getting to the pump. If there is not then check the wiring between the pump and the control board and if the wiring is fine then this will be a faulty control board.

Larry, there should be screws at the back of the top panel that would need to be removed. Once removed, the panel should be able to slide back. The panel may have decent resistance when pushing it back if it has not been moved before.

Helo Best, If the standpipe is sealed with tape, this will cause a siphoning condition as you described. Another thing that will cause this is if the standpipe the drain hose goes into is not at least at the same elevation as the main top of the washer. The only other thing that can cause it is if the drain hose is pushed into the standpipe far enough that the end of it is actually in water in the trap of the standpipe. Sure hope this helps you with your repair.

Annette, This drain pump motor appears that is screwed into place. You would simply remove the screws and then you will take off the pump motor and install the new one.
