The Motor Brush is an OEM part for Whirlpool mixers. It is designed to conduct electricity between the stationary and rotating parts of the motor, allowing the motor to function effectively.

Causes of a bad motor brush can include regular wear and tear from frequent use, buildup of carbon deposits, or damage due to electrical issues. Over time, the brushes can wear down, leading to reduced conductivity and motor performance.

Symptoms of a bad motor brush include:

  • The mixer motor not running or running intermittently
  • Sparking or unusual noises coming from the motor area
  • Reduced mixing performance or failure to operate at certain speeds

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Julie for Model Number K5SSWH

I recently acquired a kitchen aid mixer that makes a "grinding" noise when you turn it on and barely has enough power to turn the planetary. I have taken apart the mixer already and replaced the grease on all the gears (all are in perfect condition). I was able to turn both the ventilation fan and the motor shaft freely by hand with mixer unplugged to check for a bend in the fan blades or a bend in the shaft that would be producing the "grinding" noise or that could be causing the motor to bind up. With the mixer plugged in and turned on the motor heats up fast (less than 30secs) ..my question is weather the brushes are bad (there is some carbon streaks on the armature) or if it is a wiring issue that is causing the motor to not get enough power?

Julie, You will want to clean up the brushes to see how worn they are but you will also want to check the speed plate to make sure that it is properly adjusted and check the governor to make sure that it is not bad.

Danny, The motor brushes need to be at least 5/16" in length, and oriented properly in the holder. At this point, based on your post information, you need to look at the armature W10900799 since the control board and plate were damaged and shorted, they could have damaged the windings in the armature as well.

David for Model Number K5-A

I sent in a question a few days ago and you requested the entire model #. The above is the only model number on the Stainless band that goes around the mixer. I'm looking for new brushes for the motor. I've taken the entire mixer apart in the past few days to clean it and install a new power cord and there is no other number on the mixer. The name plate says the manufacturer is The Hobart Mfg. co. in Troy Ohio. My wifes newer mixer says KitchenAid Division, but the one I'm trying to get brushes for was my mother-in-laws and I know it's at least 20 yrs old. You may have to go back to the Hobart model numbers as I think this was made by them before KitchenAid purchased them. The brushes currently in the machine are worn down to the spring so they are not long for this world.

Joe, the general rule of thumb, the longer side of the motor brush should be installed in sync with the motor rotation / direction. If the motor rotates clockwise, the longer end should be on the right, counterclockwise, the long end should be on the left. We hope this is helpful!
