The Drive Clutch Kit is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. As an integral transmission component, it includes the clutch that engages the drive motor to rotate the central agitator or impeller.

Causes of a bad clutch kit include worn parts that have aged from repeated use. Signs include slipping, grinding, or clicking noises from the transmission area.

Symptoms of a faulty clutch kit are:

  • The washer tub failing to turn or agitate clothes during wash cycles
  • Delayed starts or intermittent rotation
  • Vibration or shaking sensed from the frontloader or toploader

This OEM replacement is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Tonna for Model Number WTW5500XW0

I have done all the diagnostics and it is pointing to a water valve issue. However, it fills with water on both hot and cold and I am getting a burning smell when it goes into the spin cycle and shuts off. At that time the lid lock light blinks and the sensing light blinks. I shut it off and the lid light keeps blinking. I have unplugged it and done the drain/spin cycle and it does fine. It just will not go through the spin cycle while doing a regular load. I did not get the burning smell when I did the drain/spin cycle like I do when it tries to go through the complete wash cycle. I am very confused. The motor also felt hot after it went through the regular cycle and got to the spin cycle, it does drain. It does not feel hot or smell when I do the drain/spin setting. Please help, I need my washer!!!

Tonna, This issue would most likely be caused by a control board issue if it will drain and spin on that setting but will not during the regular cycle.

Patty, You'll want to check the belt drive pulley and cam to see if the pulley is loose, and the "teeth" and the spring on the cam pulleys are damaged or distorted. If all's ok, then check the shift actuator WPW10006355, make sure there's no loose wires and the shift lever is properly seated in the linkage. The shift actuator determines which way the gears will turn to make the washer agitate or spin, so that's most likely where the problem is.

Hello Jennifer. It sounds like the bearings are bad and will need to be replaced in the unit.

Tracy, You will want to access the tech sheet from the control panel of your unit and put the unit into the diagnostics and see if there are any stored error codes. With the unit doing everything except spinning then the most common cause would be the shift actuator that is faulty. The part number is WPW10006355.

Hello Priscilla, If the noise is a high pitched sound it is most likely something in the drain pump WPW10276397. If it sounds like a freight train you will need to replace the gearcase W11454741.

Parriss, Check the pulley at the bottom of the unit to make sure that it is not loose. Also try to readjust the clothes and make sure that they are not off balance. Check to make sure that the balance ring on the inner tub is not damaged and make sure that it still has solution in it.

Dan, You will want to make sure that the unit is not getting off balance and the suspension which could cause the issue. Also check to make sure that there is nothing clogged in the drain hoses that would cause a slow drain. The last thing would be a shift actuator that is not engaging properly.

Whirlpool model WTW4800XQ0 Loud gear grinding sound when it tries to stop spinning after rinse cycle, very prolonged, sounds like the splutch. When this fails, "lid locked" flashes repeatedly and the machine will not work until it has been unplugged/replugged several times. Will a bad splutch cause the flashing lid lock light? Examined the splutch, it has some wear but not heavily worn. After unplugging/replugging several times, the machine will go through several washes with no problem, then it happens again.
