The Clutch is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This part engages the transmission with the inner tub, allowing the washing machine to switch between agitation and spin cycles efficiently. This clutch ensures that the tub reaches the appropriate spin speed, contributing to effective washing and rinsing of clothes.

Causes of a bad clutch can include wear and tear from prolonged use, accumulation of debris or lint that interferes with its operation, or damage from overloading the washer.

Symptoms of a bad clutch include:

  • The washer not spinning or agitating correctly
  • Loud noises during spin or agitation cycles
  • The washer struggling to reach full spin speed
  • Excessive vibration or shaking during operation

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Clutch (Part Number: OEM18037737)

Rocky, You will want to make sure that you remove the spanner nut and the drive block on the unit and removed the inner tub. Once these are removed and you have removed the 3 bolts securing the transmission, you would simply need to pull the transmission out. You may have to lay the unit on its back in order to get it out as it may stick but pulling on it hard enough should free it up.

Washer does not agitate but the spin cycle works fine. I changed the cam dogs but it still did not spin. I pulled the transmission and when I turn the input shaft from the motor side the main shaft for the agitator it spins in one direction but not the other and I do not know if this is normal. I pulled the cover and all the gears look fine with minimal ware. I do not know how you test the clutch assembly or if that will cause this problem.

Hello Alan, The machine should be opened and the transmission removed to inspect the coupler 285753A, and the clutch and brake W10820043 assemblies. If no problems are found with these, the next suspect is the gearcase 3360629.

My Maytag Centennial washer is starting to agitate as soon as the knob is pushed in, before the water starts filling. I never did that before. Also I replaced the clutch because the clothes were wet at the end of the cycle but I just found out that just before it stops spinning it is running more water into the tub, not a lot but enough to make the clothes wet again. Is the control board toast or is there something else I should check first. Thanks

Hello L.J., A high pitched squealing sound is normally an item in the drain pump WP3363394 which can sometimes be removed from the drain pump and sometimes causes the drain pump to have to be replaced.

LJ, The clutch lining comes with the clutch and it would not hurt to replace the motor coupling at the same time although not necessary.

Gary, Based on the problem description this issue sounds like it would be caused by a gearcase issue. The gearcase part number is 3360629.

Hello Jay, I would use the old one to avoid issues since you are correct on the different spring tensions.

Hello Mike, You would want to check to see if your drain pump and drain lines are clogged. Make sure that the vanes on the pump look good and nothing blocking water from pumping through smoothly. Also check your pressure hose to make sure that it does not have a clog to it or being kinked causing the pressure switch to think that there is still water in unit.
