The Hi-Limit Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It functions as a critical safety device that monitors and controls the temperature within the dryer, preventing it from overheating. When the dryer reaches a temperature that is too high, this thermostat will cut off the power to the heating element to mitigate the risk of fire.

Symptoms of a bad Hi-Limit Thermostat include:

  • Dryer not heating adequately or at all
  • Clothes taking longer than usual to dry
  • The dryer repeatedly shutting off during a cycle
  • Excessive heat emitted from the dryer even on lower settings

Causes of a bad Hi-Limit Thermostat can include a malfunction due to electrical issues, lint buildup causing restricted airflow and increased temperature, or failure of other components like the cycling thermostat that can cause the dryer to overheat.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Joe. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly.

Faye, In any case where the unit is taking longer to dry or overheating, the first thing to check would be the dryer venting from the blower wheel of the unit all the way to the outside of the home. The venting getting clogged would cause this issue. If the venting checks ok then the cycling thermostat would be the most likely cause for failure.

Arthur, The red wire that comes down from the timer will connect to the thermal fuse. There will be a jumper wire that goes from the thermal fuse to the high limit thermostat. Either the high limit will be connected direct to the heater block or there will be a jumper that goes from the high limit to the heater block.

Larry, The thermal fuse being blown would cause this issue. The unit will not run at all but you will also want to check the door switch to make sure that it is not bad.
