The Surface Burner Spark Electrode is an OEM part for Whirlpool gas ranges. This electrode is responsible for generating the spark that ignites the gas burner, allowing the burner to produce a flame for cooking.

Over time, the spark electrode can become faulty due to exposure to high temperatures, grease, and general wear and tear. This can lead to unreliable ignition or complete failure to ignite the burner.

Symptoms of a bad surface burner spark electrode include:

  • The burner not igniting
  • Weak or intermittent spark
  • Clicking sound without ignition
  • Burner flame going out soon after ignition

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Surface Burner Spark Electrode (Part Number: OEM18038565)

Lowell, You will want to take the control panel off the gas valves and check the ignition switch to make sure that the switches have continuity. When you turn on the valve, check across the leads of the switches with the switches in the on position and check for continuity. If any of them have no continuity then replace the switches. If these check ok then you will need to check the electrodes for damage. Also check for continuity of the igniters.

Justin, To replace the ignitors on unit you will first turn off gas and electric to unit. Remove the grates and burner caps from top. Remove the burner base off the top, they may be held in by screws. remove the mounting screws from each of the four burners. Lift the front of the cooktop and unsnap it from the 2 clips that are located on the side about 2 inches back between main top and side panels. and prop cooktop up.

Dave for Model Number MGR6772BDS

I got some water down onto the igniter switch (the second knob from the front of the stove) it kept shutting off the breaker. I order and installed an igniter switch and now all burners continually keep clicking. If I try to light the right front burner it won't light. I looked at the burner igniter and the bottom is cracked off and missing. Also need to mention I thought I was going to originally have to remove the burners so I soaked them in penetrating oil. I tried to avoid getting the oil on the burner igniters! Where do i go from here?

Hello Dave, You will want to test the ignitor switches by checking for continuity. With switch in off position there will be no continuity across switch. If there is then the switch is bad. If they check good then you will want to check wiring to make sure that there are no broken or damaged wires. If they check good then you would need to replace spark module. If the ignitor is broken at the bottom this would cause the burner to no operate and you would need to replace the burner.

Hi. Remove the burner grates. Remove the inner burner mount screws and lay them aside specifically in order with the burner. Use a putty knife to reach into the front sides and release the lt. and rt. clips holding the top down. Use the prop rod to hold the top up that is under the top assy. Release the igniter wire center holding tab and remove the wire from the igniter part # 8523793. Remove the inner burner -igniter mount screw and replace the igniter. After cleaning the burner, make sure all the horizontal holes are cleared with a straight pin. So the drafts will not blow out a weak flame. Make sure the burner caps are all cleaned back off with a small, soft brass wire brush where the igniter spark point is on the bottom side of the cap. The burner is part # WP4455981. Make sure the orifice is clear. If they are then replace the burner valve part # WP9757218. Thank You.

Hello Ed. Make sure the spark switches are good on the unit. If so, it sounds like the spark module 74009098 is bad and will need to be replaced in the unit.

Mike, You'll need to remove the cooktop and check for a damaged igniter switch [AP4008846and wiring to the switch. Check to make, sure there are no loose connections on the wires to the igniters. Then you'll need to move the range out of the cabinet and check the spark module 8215557 and wiring, located on the back of the range. We'll be sending you some additional information. Thanks

Hello Thomas, The problem sounds like the start switch WP74007696 on the gas valve. The only way I could change my mind is if the other ignitors spark when that valve is turned on. Then I would have to say it's the ignitor WP8523793 or wiring to it.
