Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Surface Heating Element (Top Burner) (Part Number: OEM18092820)

Phylis, You may want to take a 1 or 2 quart pot half full of water and set it on a medium heat setting, observe the burner operation, it should cycle off and on and should take quite a while to bring the water to a boil. If the element does not cycle off and on, you most likely have a problem in the burner infinite switch. If you were using a very large pot and a very large quantity of water, you may have transferred enough heat into the cooktop glass and burner, to give the impression, everything overheated. Thanks

Susan, You may want to order a new burner infinite switch, WP7403P239-60 just in case. And here are some basic instructions for replacing the burner element. " CAUTION: When you work on the electric range, be careful when handling the sheet metal parts. Sharp edges may be present, and you can cut yourself if you are not careful. 1. Turn off the electrical supply to the range. 2. Open the oven door and remove the screws from under the front of the maintop, then close the oven door. 3. Slide the maintop forward and remove the ground wire and main harness strain relief from the rear of the maintop. 4. Lay a protective covering between the maintop and the range to protect the finish, then turn the maintop over and lay it on the covering so that you can access the components. At the back of the maintop, remove the screw from the retaining bracket that contains the defective surface element and limiter, then carefully raise the end of the bracket, and lift the element and limiter from the maintop. If you are replacing a surface element, disconnect the wires from the terminals and reconnect them to the new element, then carefully install the limiter in the new surface element. Remove the old element, clean the glass of any debris, and install the new element. Reinstall the maintop and reassemble the range. REASSEMBLY NOTE: When reinstalling the maintop, make sure that it is centered on the range, that the side brackets are engaged, and that the rear side flanges are inside the end caps." Good Luck and thanks

Hello Jermaine. You will need to test and see if there is power at the element. If so, and the element does not glow, you will need to replace the element W10823715. If there is not power at the element, then the switch WP7403P239-60 will need to be replaced on the unit. You can use a meter and test this at the switch. Check across H1 and H2 at the switch. With the switch on, there should be power. If not, replace the switch. If so, replace the element. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps.http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
