For Whirlpool Whirlpool Everydrop Refrigerator Water Filter 3 (Part Number: OEM17950698)

Hello Dennis. It could be that the water tank is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit. Usually you will not get a taste from a filter because they use charcoal.

Mark, You will want to close the door on the filter housing and try to open it again. The filter should release with the door opening. If it does not slide out try to get ahold of it with a pair of channel locks and pull it out. If unable to pull out then it sounds like the filter housing is damaged and would most likely need to replace the filter housing.

I have a stuck Whirlpool water filter. It is located in the top right side of the fridge. The little door drops down allowing the filter to drop down also and be turned counter clockwise. It turns partially but then won't budge any further. We have tried all the suggestions. There is no shelf blocking the little door so it is opening completely. I've tried shutting off the water and then dispensing some to release the pressure but this fridge won't dispense any water when the shut off valve is closed. I am wondering if I could puncture the filter somehow, would this release the pressure enough to get it to turn (obviously I would shut off the water first). Or do you have some other suggestion? Thank you!

Rick, If the unit is still chattering with the new filter in and causing the door to pop open then this issue will be a filter head that is defective.

Hello Pat. Make sure the freezer is between 0° and 5°. You need to check and see if there is power going to the water valve when the icemaker cycles. If so, replace the water valve on the unit. If not, or the icemaker does not cycle, you will need to replace the icemaker on the unit. Also, check and make sure the fill tube on the unit is not frozen and clogged. If so, replace the water valve and thaw out the fill tube. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Paul. You will need to check and make sure the filter is pushed all the way in. If so, check and see if the latch on the housing is broke.

Hello Judy, Changing the filter should have no effect on the temperature of the water being dispensed. It is recommended by the manufacturer to throw away a glass or two of water since the first water which was in the door can be warmer so the dispenser line does not freeze.

Greg Mc. for Model Number Sears Kenmore Elite 106.57863801

I bought some cheap water filters for this fridge (SwiftGreen SGF-W84) but I'm sure they don't last as long as the Whirlpool OEM 4396841 filters I was buying, the cheap ones last 3-4 months and the OEMs last about 5-6 months and I'm not imagining this, the cheap ones don't last as long before the "replace" indicator comes on the front panel, my question is: may I assume that the "replace" indicator is driven by something other than just a timer, does Whirlpool use some kind of flow device or DP cell? My assumption is I'm not saving any money if the cheap ones don't last as long ...

Greg, you're pretty close to target, No there is no timer to register usage. The main control has a "counting circuit" and a flow device inside the fill valve. Whenever power (120 VAC) is applied to either of the fill valve solenoids (dispenser or ice maker) the eeprom on the main control board registers a "hit", after so many "hits" the "change filter" light is illuminated. In a lot of cases, if you're on well water or have a problem with water quality the filters(especially after market filters) can take less time and usage to filter and cause the light to illuminate.
