I believe the original filter was a Whirlpool PUR 4396918 for L400V. I'm apparently purchased my refrigerator when Whirlpool was in the midst of changing the filter design. What is the correct filter I need?

Refrigerator is 16 years old and water filter has been changed every 6 months and although it was difficult to insert new filter , it has always gone in. Not this time. Do not see anything blocking in the cartridge tube. Does the cylinder tube ever need replacing? The problem is not the filter--it seems to be the cylinder tube. ??????
