Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Direct Drive Washer Motor (Part Number: OEM18030759)

Steve Ward for Model Number MTW5870TWO

For about 4 months my washer would fail to spin on heavy loads, leaving clothes soaked. Recently it began failing to spin occasionally on lighter loads, and progressively got worse. The motor would be running during spin cycle and would stoop if I lifted lid. The coupler looks fine. As far as I can tell, the clutch looks like new. What specifically should I be looking for on clutch? Where should I go from here? My next step is to look at basket drive and get a look at top side of brake for any debris. What do you suggest? Thanks!

Sean P. for Model Number 6alsr7244mwo

Gday there, Our direct drive whirlpool washing machine fills with water as normal. It is not making the loud clicking noise which usually activates the agitator. I have checked the motor windings which seem to have slightly higher resistance reading than recommended. Also when I place a probe between any motor wire and the motor case I get about 20 ohms resistance instead of the open circuit. It appears the motor is the problem. I just wish to make sure before i order. Should i be checking anything else i.e. start capacitor?

OldFarmer, Does the washer drain and spin ? I'm thinking you need to check the water level switch circuits W10339334 and the timer multi plug for loose connections or wires. Good Luck and Thanks

Dan, you'll need to check the motor drive coupler 285753A and the clutch assembly 285785 for excess wear and tear. But first check and make sure theres nothing stuck at the top of the tub or between the tubs. Good ZLuck and Thanks

Boomtown for Model Number LA5200XTW0

I acquired this washer last week and the fellow told me it had a small leak. I went to do a load of clothes and after the tub filled up and when the wash cycle was supposed to kick in I smelled a burning smell and it kick the breaker. I hooked it up again today where it left off yesterday and I can hear the timer but nothing happens. Do you think a wire burnt in two or what. I had taken it apart and blew it out and looked for bad hose before I ever tried to run it. Its an old washer but it has been well taken care of and I want to get it going. Think about it and give me your best assessment, please. Thank you.

Hello Boomtown. You will need to look and see if there is a burnt wire or component on the unit. Also remove the pump and make sure it turns freely, and the motor WP661600 turns freely. If not, you will need to replace the part that is bad. If the wires, motor, and pump are good, you will need to test and see where your loosing voltage from. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

James M. for Model Number lsq8543jq1

I have a lsq8543jq1 washer. The unit was making a metal sound only on low speed when in regular wash. It did not affect the washing cycle, so I let it go. Today the washer filled up and stopped. I heard a hum, so I unplugged the unit. I am a retired G.E. technician, but have not worked on many whirlpool washers. I talked to my buddies in Fla. and got the unit apart. I jumped out the lid switch after I had the motor detached from the tranmission. I tried to run the motor in the rinse cycle and it hums. The coupler is worn but not broke. The pump turns ok with my finger. I assume the motor is bad, should I also change the motor coupler? Does capacitor come with the motor?

1 Answer

Hi James. Yes it sounds like you need the motor capacitor part # WP8572717. The motor coupler part # is 285753A. the motor part # is WP661600. I would suggest to first try changing just the capacitor and motor coupling, then the motor since the motor will hum only on a weak capacitor. Thanks.

Hello Dick. You will need to check and see if something is stuck inside the pump WPW10288040. If it is clear, you will want to check and see if something is stuck between the inner and outer tub assemblys. If they are clear, you may have a bad timer WPW10199989. Hope this helps.
